For long time it had been awefully quiet round Mordaehoth. Since "Bloedwraak" in 2000 nothing really had been going on. Then in 2003 "Balder" hit the scene. I had ordered it at New Era and while waiting for it to arrive I had the same feeling as when waiting for Guns'n'Roses "Use your Illusion" to come out which also took such a looooong long time. But, it was totally worth the wait.

What a jewl we have here. Wrapped in a golden sleeve with a beautiful red printing and pro tapes. Sound quality like it's a cd, they've come a long way since "Solis Sacerdotibus" as musicians but also as producers this sound isn't in the least comparable to their first demo that they recorded nearly a decade ago.

The first track is the title track "Balder" which starts off beautifully with raging double bass drums topped with a dreamy acoustic melody. From thrash to fast death metal, depressive black metal and melodic heavy metal it's all there, amazingly packed together in this one song.
"Beschermd bij den hamerslag" starts off like it was Motorhead followed by Darkthrone and Ulver. There is a nice acoustic break in the middle with impressive choir vocals whichs goes back to the first riff through a brilliant bridge [I think you call it.]

This material shows Mordaehoth creating evenmore their own style of eclectic pagan metal. I hear less Graveland influences here and more heavy thrash parts.

This really makes me hungry for more. I've read their new album is finally coming out somewhere this year. I'll definitely be looking out for that one!!
