273.15 Degrees Below
Zero was supposed to come in 2008 but it's only out now. I guess part of it was finding the label and other financial issues and part of it was most certainly line-up and/or personal issues. Nonetheless after a solid debut entitled “The Splendor of Repellent", it was about time that German deathsters would release something new. If only to prove people that they were still an active band.
Vama Marga Productions ended up in releasing this EP.
Satan bless them! As everybody is still arguing over the newest material from
Morbid Angel, some bands, more inspired than others (even Great
Old Ones) seem to remember what
Death Metal is all about and here we are with, most likely, what will remain as one of the best things I heard in
Death Metal in 2011.
The darkest kind of
Death Metal is what you wish to expect from these guys. While most of their fellow countrymen seem more versed in Technical
Brutal Death Metal,
Thornesbreed chose the
Old School approach. With a twist. No need to compare them to “dirt” German masters
Excoriate though.
Thornesbreed play the kind of classically elegant
Death Metal.
You’ll find some fantastic riffing a la
Dead Congregation, to which the band may safely be compared (and most would admit there are definitely a lot worse bands to be compared to!). Except that the Black
Metal feeling is more developed in
Thornesbreed than in
Dead Congregation with riffs that take as much from Scandinavian masters of French elite. They also are not afraid to bring in some welcome melody in their leads. Still, you shouldn’t think melody as in Melodeath, but the kind of intricate evil melodies bands like
Immolation developed over the years.
Remember “Teeth into
Red” from
Graves of the Archangels and how awesome it was to close a grand album with such a great track? Well, expect four tracks of the very same intensity on
Thornesbreed's EP. No more, no less. I wish I could write more but probably you don't need much more with the few names I dropped here and there to draw some comparisons. At this stage, the only small “minus” I can think of is that it’s way too short (though the repeat value is obviously skyrocketing…) and it leaves you wanting for more.
More as in “sophomore”. I certainly hope so.
Until then, get in touch with Vama Marga Productions and order this fantastic EP through them or any good self-respecting distro because you'll feel sorry otherwise.
