Check out the chat that SOM had with the bass guitar player from Scorpion Child, Shaun Diettrick Avants!!!

interview Scorpion ChildTo start the interview: what is Scorpion Child all about?
What are we all about? That’s a really tough question. I mean…We’re about rock n’roll, we are about taking the classics and putting kind of a modern twist on them. We are kind of an aggressive band, there’s lots of testosterone in the heaviness of the music but at the same time there is a lot of sexual undertones to it. So, it’s kind of this night and day thing.

Ultimately that’s what we are all about: exploring all the spectrum of emotion and musical styles (we take metal, we take rock, we take pop and kind of mix it all).

How did you guys meet?
Aryn [Jonathan Black] and I met each other with the original guitar player. We just sat around working on some music and then it just kind of developed into what it is now. There have been some personnel changes but Aryn and I really sorted out people that really wanted to do it and didn’t want to do this as a hobby… [people that wanted to] really take a risk, and really had it in their heart to play the kind of music that we wanted.

You have started the band back in 2006. What were the major milestones for the band throughout these almost 7 years?
Back in the beginning, I think the music itself had more of a southern “twang” to it… I guess a little “Allman Brothers” aspect to it. I wouldn’t say it is a major milestone but, we keep growing and really started to harden our sound.

I think that maybe the biggest milestone that we’ve had is just being lucky enough to play with certain larger bands and then getting signed to Nuclear Blast which is probably the biggest milestone that we’ve come across right now and so much has happened since (in a short time). We had a 5 years period where there wasn’t a lot going on and then in a matter of 6 months we are doing two tours and we are signed to a label.

Talking about you signing with Nuclear Blast, how did this happen?
I don’t really know… I just woke up one day and it happened! I just got a text message or phone call saying that was happening and I said: “That’s great!” (laughs).

You will be releasing an album in June. Could
interview Scorpion Child you say a few words about it?
It will be our debut. It’s really an eclectic mix of the years that we’ve put in to this. Like I said, with the personnel changes there has been certain songs that certain people worked on and put their input on and there are certain songs that the new people are on. So, it is really a collection of songs from the past 6 years. It has been kind of done for a while so we are ready to finally get it off our chest, off our shoulders.

Since it will be kind of a “eclectic mix”, you guys probably didn’t plan on a certain vibe or on the feeling that your listener would have with the album, did you? It will be, like you said, a collection of the history of the band…?
Yeah but with that being said, we carefully (at least for the arrangement of the record) arranged it so it carries this “night time” vibe and also “day time”, “happier” side so… it is kind of a rollercoaster. I mean, like, some songs are going to be really heavy, in your face and we actually have some ballads and we have some “poppier” things on there. So, there is really something for everybody on there.

You have released a video clip for “Polygon of Eyes”. What was the idea behind the whole circle of girls in the forest and the girl running away from that figure with the black outfit?
We were going to make a video and we needed a synopsis for it so, that’s just kind of what we came up with. Originally it was supposed to be us: we are kind of stuck in this purgatory, just playing the music. Meanwhile, there is this group of kind of good witches, forest women. And this evil force is coming and they have to fight it so in order to fight it they create their potions and take us out of this limbo. Our music and our presence is what scare off the evil spirit… (laughs).

Yeah… it is a music video; you are supposed to have fun with it. So, there is not a lot of meaning but there is a story behind it.

You are touring with Clutch and Orange Goblin. How have the fans been reacting to your set?
It has been very welcoming. It has boosted our confidence for sure. We don’t have a record out so nobody knows who we are. But, for those 25 minutes that we have, we give it our all. We
interview Scorpion Childshow everybody what we are capable of.

Just from talking to people… wondering at the venue after [the concert] people just stop [by] it and tell you that they really enjoyed it or they will come up to the merch table. The feedback has been really, really great.

Any favorite moments so far?
Favorite moments? Well, Dave Grohl is here! I’m totally trying to fan boy out on him! The bass player from System of a Down is here, Scott Batiste from Savious is here… so actually tonight is kind of a highlight because here we are in LA and playing at a great club, people that we kind of look up to and respect in the industry are here. Whether they know we are here or not … it’s a highlight for us to say that they are here at our show… I would [also] just say [that another highlight is] travelling … the highlight is to play in front of 1500 people!

This tour will be a long one! Any plans for the rest of the year?
The record should be coming out sometime in June so I imagine that we are going to really go out again and start pushing the record. Personal goals: I would like to start working on the next one. We already have a lot of ideas and we talked to a producer so it looks that everything is coming together for that. I’m really excited about doing the next record… more cohesive and finally a crafted piece from front to back. This first album is like I said: many years of songs, and different emotions, and different times and places. But this one, we will finally have a really good group together that is all in the same page. I’m looking forward of really seeing what we are all capable of… now that we are more stable.

So… for the readers that want to learn more about Scorpion child, what is the best way of getting information (website, facebook page, etc)?
We do have scorpionchildmusic.com, that’s the website we have right now… or Facebook. I guess that’s the way of finding information about us… yeah.

Any messages to the SOM readers?
Messages? If anything, I would say: open you mind, because we are not a metal band… we don’t want to be pigeon hold and I think that this first record will show what we are capable of doing.
