Andre Matos (en)

Andre Matos can be familiar name for you: he is the vocalist known by several bands and projects, like Angra, Shaaman, Viper,Virgo, Avantasia… And recently he started his solo career. Of course it was a great cause to chat with the musician a little bit. Here is a bit more about Andre Matos and his music. Thanks to Irina Ivanova (CD-Maximum) for help in organizing interview

interview Andre MatosWhat do you think if someone jokes about you? Are you offended? Do you have a good sense of humour?
Oh, I MUST have sense of humour. I'm Brazilian and Brazilians are well-humoured by nature, we make jokes about everything, even tragedies... And I think that one of the best quality on a human being is the ability of making jokes about himself.

Nowadays a lot of tragic things happen in the world. How do you think, should we take it all only seriously or maybe we can also joke about ourselves and situations?
Well, it really depends on the situation. If something really tragic happens and affects people's llives forever, of course this is not meant to become a joke. But we must have a certain sense of humour when something ridiculous pretends to be serious.

Should music reflect this reality or entertain and help to forget tragedy? How do you think, should musicians pay more attention to what happens in the world? And, maybe, sometimes compose songs about it, dedicate songs…
Of course, music is a powerful tool; we must always use it for the good, to spread a message around. Not necessarily a religious message or anything mystical - but a message of hope. Even in sadness there's hope. And when times are good, music is also good to help celebrating the good times... which are becoming more and more rare nowadays... so, maybe music is the exit!

Why did you decide to make song “Moonlight” again?
Because that was my very first composition and now, with my first solo album, I decided to re-issue
interview Andre Matosthat song. In fact, the song was basically re-composed, there were new parts added and even new lyrics to it. It was an interesting trip back in time, to re-tell a story that was written many years ago.

Have you ever thought about making covers for other classical pieces?
By myself or by other artists? Well, I always think of both. But sometimes it's really difficult to choose. You have to identify yourself to what you're doing and feel it as an honest tribute. Otherwise, recording a cover song only to have a bonus track in the album will never work out properly.

Many bands make covers for classical pieces. Do you check them, is it interesting for you? Do you like something?
I normally stick to the original versions. For some reasons, those versions were made at a certain time and by certain people. They tell a story. There are rare cases when a cover tops the original version. One example is Johnny Cash's performance for 'Hurt', a song originally written by Trent Reznor, from Nine Inch Nails.

Don’t you want to make any experiments and maybe try another music style? In what kind of project you would like to take part?
My training is classical; therefore I can imagine I could do something into this direction someday. But still, I'm too involved with my solo career and right now cannot predict which or what new projects are about to come...

How do you keep yourself in good shape? Do you do any sports? Is the tour good sport training? :)
Touring might keep you on shape or not... it depe
interview Andre Matosnds on how you handle it. It's important to do sports and also important to have a good rest after performing. A healthy life is recommendable!

What is the most difficult for you on tour?
To fix the time and the discipline, especially when you're travelling around from one to another country and there are many time change zones, etc. You should try to keep a normal life but that's nearly impossible on the road.

Do you like photo sessions, filming videos and promo things like that? Do you collect different posters, advertisings of concert and tours?
Yes, absolutely! Somehow, that's your history and you must collect it! But it is impossible to have every single poster or magazine or radio interview... Therefore, the internet is a good help, sometimes you can find some material which was lost in time and somebody has rescued.

Do you know about addition of new 7 deadly sins? Do you agree with such decision? What do you think about it? Are you religious person?
I agree with some of them and disagree with others. Everything that's against our planet and nature should be condemned. But to oppose against science is just stupid. We owe most of our comfort in life today to science. Sometimes religion seems to be very conservative because of course there are conflicts of interests. One thing is to care about your spiritual needs. Another thing is to interfere on something that could save lives.

Your most unloved question from journalists is... ?
Please describe your album track by track!
