A FEW DEADLY FACTS ABOUT OUR GROTESQUELY-GREAT METAL BAND, OTHERWISE KNOWN, AS THE ALMIGHTY "CATHARCYST".

The year was 1997. On a cold, damp, autumn day in Lively, Ontario, Canada, Catharcyst was born. They were then known around town as the very deadly but distinguished "Diversity". After some dreadful departures in 1999, and a new gathering of souls, "Diversity" disposed of their sick ridden name and became the ever so popular but stimulating, "State Of Aggression".

State Of Aggression released their first and only record in the Y2K rigged year of 2000, entitled "Utopia Is Humanless". The album consisted of 6 songs + a bonus track. The CD was recorded, mixed & mastered at Easter Island Studios in Sudbury and boasts' great sound (CD available @ http://catharcyst.bigcartel.com). In 2002, David Viljanmaa (guitarist/vocalist) decided to end his role in the band, and thus, end his era of terror. The band now consisted of Paul Cipriani (guitar, vocals, keyboards), Bill Moores (guitar, vocals, keyboards, didgeridoo), Joel Ferris (bass & effects) and Jay Maloney (drums & percussion). After the dust had settled, Paul dialed up the name "CATHARCYST".

The band name "Catharcyst", spawns from two root words - "Catharsis" & "Cyst". Catharsis, is defined as a purgation (a release) of emotions, or relief of emotional tensions, especially through a work of art (music in our case). Cyst, is defined as an abnormal sac-like growth of the body in which matter is contained. Put it all together, and you have one ferocious sac of metal brilliance, waiting to explode onto the forefront of the music scene and on the stage.

Catharcyst released their first ravishing record in 2004. It was entitled, "Feast On The Flesh" (CD available @ http://catharcyst.bigcartel.com). They self-produced, mixed & mastered the 11 song disc. They played a slew of performances including towns and cities such as Toronto, North Bay, Sturgeon Falls and of course, The Greater City Of Sudbury. Highlights of this era include sharing the stage with Despised Icon, Ion Dissonance, Eclipse Eternal, Fuck The Facts and more.

The departure of Bill Moores (guitarist/vocalist) happened in the spring of 2006. He left the band to pursue other musical interests such as Loot N' Burn, My Poor Brother, & Lateral Flow. Joel Ferris (bass player for 10 years) decided to leave the band in the summer of 2007.

Catharcyst was on definite hiatus, and the band was almost ready to fold until they found a new bass player by the name of Kipp Grose. Kipp used to play in the industrial punk/metal outfits you might remember as "Satan's Dollhouse", "Flambo", & "Inherent Noise". He currently has a project called "d3function". Kipp joined the Catharcyst ranks at the end of the calander year of 2007. Soon they were sharing the stage with well known acts such as Cryptopsy, Origin, The Last Felony, Estuary, Behold ... The Arctopus, Yakuza, Beneath The Massacre, Blackguard, Fuck The Facts, 3 Inches Of Blood, Goatwhore, Kalmah, Wolven Ancestry, Twenty Gauge Ticket ... and more.

The brand new E.P. was released on May 18th, 2010 ... entitled - "A Spell Has Been Cast". The new E.P. was recorded, mixed & mastered by Darren Favot (Satisfaction Darrenteed) @ Sardonic Moon Studio in Sudbury. "A Spell Has Been Cast" contains 4 spell-bounding tracks of melodic blackened death metal. Joshua from Bloodmoon Art & Design has taken care of the artwork for the EP, and our new T-Shirt design. Jason has recently become the 2nd guitarist in CATHARCYST. He will be handling the rhythm guitar duties. CATHARCYST is set to record their long awaited full-length CD, "A Purgative Bondage" ... Jason LaFauci & Paul Cipriani will be handling the duties of recording/mixing & mastering ... with new songs on the horizon, 2011 proves to be a monumental year for Catharcyst & for the fans of the band.

Catharcyst is definitely back with a purpose and meaning. There's still a hell of a lot more to come from this hellacious metal band. After years of trials and tribulations (1997-Present), the band now holds the title of "Sudbury's Longest - Lasting Metal Band", and they intend to keep it. They are proud to be a part of the Canadian Metal Scene and very proud to be a metal band from Sudbury, Ontario, Canada ... stay brutal & deranged!!!
