BOWELISM was born in a classroom in Amadora/Lisbon, originally under the name BOWEL OF MARY, created by Carlos Martins and Bruno Almeida on November 13, 1997. After class, a group of noisy kids would go to Pedro Teixeira’s house, where they played Death Metal & Grindcore in the old school vein, with filthy lyrics and homemade cassette recordings.

The initial lineup consisted of: Carlos Martins (Vocals through headphones), Bruno Almeida (Drums on a keyboard), and Pedro Teixeira (Guitar). It was in this context that the first tracks were created: Vomit, Under The Shit, Bowels Sweet Bowels, Masturbation In The Face Of Mary, Diarrhea, and Dry Shit.

At that time, the group had several friends who would hang out at Pedro’s house, but the one who showed up most often was Marcos Costa, who eventually took over the drums (on the keyboard). From there, BOWEL OF MARY became a studio band!

Soon after, Paulo Custódio joined as the drummer, and the first official studio lineup was: Carlos Martins (Vocals), Pedro Teixeira (Guitar), Marcos Costa (Bass), and Paulo Custódio (Drums).

The first concert took place on December 21, 2000, in Bairro Alto, Lisbon, at the now-defunct Bar ROOKIE, by invitation of Dorgsenn. That bar was one of the most important meeting points for the major Underground Metal bands of the time.

Meanwhile, the drummer left, and several others tried to take the spot.

In 2001, Marcos Costa renamed the band to BOWELISM.

In 2003, André Cruz joined as the drummer, adding a new intensity to BOWELISM's sound with a more Punk touch. During that period, the band played several concerts, marking their presence in the underground scene. In 2004, they recorded the Demo "Noise Against Hypocrisy" during a rehearsal, using a MiniDisc, which captured the rawness and authenticity of their sound. However, that same year, André Cruz had to leave the band due to professional commitments, marking a new phase in the band's history.

Until 2018, the band's lineup underwent several changes, but it was that year that José Vitorino joined as the drummer, establishing a new stability in the formation. Since then, the band has maintained the following lineup: Carlos Martins (Vocals), Pedro Teixeira (Guitar), Marcos Costa (Bass), and José Vitorino (Drums). This lineup allowed the band to record the EP "World Hard Reset" in 2019, released with re-recordings of old tracks, along with two new songs that showed the evolution of BOWELISM's sound.
