It seems rare these days to find a black metal fusion band with a considerable amount of black metal intergrated into their sound, it seems that the post black metal tag has become a catch all for bands who incorporate some black metal elements into their sound but not enough to warrant them being called a legitimate black metal act.
Sleep White Winter are not one of these bands, thankfully remaining true to black metal, the band has kept the black metal formula whilst mixing it with some sublime moments of post rock beauty.
Sleep White Winter don't exactly create a truly unique and innovative sound on Trapped in a Memory but they sure as hell do a mighty fine job of creating sublime and beautiful blackgaze. The music is quite relaxing yet it doesn't lack the black metal bite I've come to love so much. Ferocious blackgaze is a great concept, yet isn't explored as much as it damn well should. What's with all these bands creating soft and twinkly music?! This is black metal for crying out loud! I expect aggression!
Sleep White Winter are excellent because they make some pretty ferocious music yet perfectly mix it with some of the most emotional and stunning moments I've heard in a long time.
Sleep White Winter seem to have been massively influenced by Swedish melodic black metal acts, there's lots of catchy riffs that have that distinctive Swedish vibe. Don't try and tell me that the riff near the end of
Labyrinth of
Lucidity would be out of place on a
Catamenia record. It seems strange that
Sleep White Winter is the only band I've heard that have mixed the distinctive Swedish style of melodic black metal in with elements of shoegazing and post rock, it's a pretty solid formula and creates some of the most majestic and emotional sounding blackgaze I've heard in a long, long time.
The production is incredible, it's raw, the guitars are ear spliting and the vocals are harsh as fuck, just the way I like it! There's absolutely no attempt to be made easy listening on Trapped in a Memory, even in the
Alcest cover the guitars are chainsaw distorted. They sound great mixed under the gentle clean vocals, and it adds a surprisingly effective contrast between raw beastial black metal fury with shoegaze and post rock beauty. Trapped in a Memory has some of the best clean vocals I've heard, the vocal melodies in Last
Dying Dreams are incredibly melodious and infectiously catchy, I really love the way they float beautiful over the aggressive as a terrorist on narcotics music. It adds a startling contrast that works incredibly well, keeping the music incredibly entertaining throughout. There's never a dull moment on Trapped in a Memory and is one of the best blackgaze albums I've heard in a long time. Essential.
