The CD title nearly seems to threaten to captivate my attention, no chance to be set free again… and the five musicians in ANTARES can manage to bring home the bacon as a matter of fact. This is already the third release besides a Demo and promo recording which should attract the listeners` advertence and the chances to have success are not bad I assume.
All death metal fans, who have no problems with trips to more complicated sound landscapes, are addressed here. The songs interspersed with unobtrusive keyboard sounds, feature a progressive and partly quite complex coating. One reason for this is the variable and diverting vocal style, which boosts the possibilities for ANTARES not to get lost in the mass. The aggressive (and very good) voice is not really that characteristic, oscillating between deep growls and Black Metal like screeching; but the clear, partly heroic intonated, partly spoken vocals can indicate directions and fight the one or other lyrical battle against above mentioned aggressive organ of speech. Concerning texts it is convenient that they don’t contain the normally used blood soaked death and devil thing, but deal with human feelings like fears or inner disruption.
Musically, ANTARES agitates in interplay of blast beats and mid-tempo rhythms, the songs are filled with breaks, but they don’t destroy the songs’ structures at all. They are placed in not anticipated positions and are therefore a guarantee for suspense and variation – and it is a big advantage for a CD being not predictable and constructed. In addition, the technical realization is above-board as well as the good, but not perfect and crystal clear sound, which abets the volitional build-up of dark and menacing sentiments.
Despite many good ideas and light bulb moments (the antiphon, showing its advantage in Unirony and Fly With Breeze eminently), ANTARES did not write an outstanding killer song, but the guys balance this with homogeneous, high quality. The sound cosmos is also enriched with some adorning samples like the ticking clock in the title song Mind Collectors, so that I can speak of an all around felicitous record. The music is not easy to consume, and/but unfolds a vast array of details after a few listening sessions. As a consequence, friends of diversified, partial complex tracks should consider the one or other acoustic test run.
