Move along, nothing to see here

No Consequence is another of those bands riding the whole Djent craze. Io is their second full length and my first encounter with the band.

The sound of Io is pretty much what to expect from Djent, Metalcore riffs and vocals, clean sections and general progressivism. The problem with Io and most recent Djent outings is the fact that instead of finding their own sound, they are simply content to regurgitate their peers, providing nothing unique or exciting with Io. From the get go one can easily trace influences from bands such as Fellsilent, TesseracT, Uneven Structure and of course Meshuggah.

Everything on Io just feels regurgitated from the predictable chugging, the lyrics and the Metalcore vocals, everything just feels rehashed and worn out. The only thing that will stop listeners realizing how little depth to the music there is is the furious pace by which everything is unleashed. It doesn’t help that there are twelve tracks on Io, which only highlights how similar and regurgitated the entire album is.

There are however some things Io does right. For starters the musicians are clearly technically proficient, there’s some pretty good solo and riff work on Io but unfortunately most of the time they are not pushing themselves to create something really technical and complex. Sentient is a pretty good track which gives me hope for the bands future. Illusions of Control is another good track with some soothing ambiance and some pretty neat riffs. Vocal wise this album is okay, the harsh vocals are pretty generic but they suit the music, the clean vocals aren’t half bad and work well in conjunction with the rest of the music. The production on Io is stellar, everything can be clearly heard and no instrument is ever buried, with everything shining out clearly. The production is a major selling point because it’s some of the best production I’ve heard in a while. The lighter elements sound excellent as well, adding a much needed sense of depth and atmosphere to Io.

Unfortunately what good elements Io does possess get buried underneath the sheer lack of originality that hangs over this album like a vengeful deity. It’s albums like this that give the genre a bad name; it sounds pretty much nearly the same as every other Djent album out right now. Although the tracks Sentient and Illusions of Control shows a glimmer of hope for this young band, there’s still a long way to go before they can be expected to make a permanent mark in the Progressive Metal scene.

themetal - 19 Junho 2013: No consequence are one of my favourite bands due to listening to single coerce: conform. They have a unique style that mixes both progressive metal and djent.
AXEL071721 - 23 Novembro 2013: I don't understand, I really think it's a great album.
