Sometimes in my musical life, I was punched hard by an album.
That happened with such different musical styles and bands; like
Metallica,
Nirvana, The Strokes,
The Kovenant (when
Covenant), Sodom, The Pixies,
Amorphis, and some more of course. Dämmerfarben also caught me by surprise because I wasn't expecting this coming my way.
"
Im Abendrot" is an album of this "small" German band, proving that amateur musicians can surpass great bands just by playing with their own tools, with their own heart. This is a work of passion, with lots of melancholic elements, with kilometers of melodic parts, and this is what I like in black metal. Roughness mixed with melancholy and pure melody. I have to reckon that the album is not brilliant in many aspects. Some songs are more direct and plain. The guitar and drumming are sometimes a bit too simple, but the way the album reaches your ears just makes you want to re-listen to some pieces here and there, especially the acoustic ones. A good example of this is "Nachtgedanken", a pretty normal song, but with a beautiful acoustic interludes which last for quite a long time.
But everything starts with an intro instrumental that really puts you in the right mood with it's atmospheric sound, which end with some beautiful violins. The opening space to the first real theme "
Nebel und Regen" the first display of the way the band plays. It's songs are heavy, melodic and with a lot of diversity in instrumental areas, and tempos. You will see that a lot, in the next themes, and then there is another instrumental called "Einsamkeit" to calm things down for a while, just before the great song "Regen in der Dämmerung", probably my favorite song on the whole album! Love the way those guitars sound and the way the keyboards run into the melody in a simple and yet very effective way. Great song! (as the remaining album is!).
Dämmerfarben worked really hard on this album, mixing black metal elements of beautiful acoustic guitars, pianos (how beautiful is the intro of "Hinaus in die nacht"!!). This whole mixture of textures, of different moods make "
Im Abendrot" an album that you listen, re-listen, and then you get a feeling that despite it's simplicity in guitar and drums, you are in presence of a band's masterpiece. I doubt they will get better than this, but I really hope they do!
