You've got to love
Metal. The genre is so rich that no matter what you still find new bands to rediscover even after more than twenty years.
Disfigured Corpse is one of these bands, they hail from the Czech republic and have been around about twenty years as well and to my greatest shame this is the very first time I get to listen to those grinding monsters.
One thing you should clear your mind with is their moniker. You may think you might be in for some generic Goregrind or gory
Death Metal but you couldn't be more far astray from the truth.
Disfigured Corpse plays... Well... Let's see... I guess it won't be that easy to categorize those guys, eh.
While the opener is a keyboard played intro reminiscent of some occult
Death Metal aka, and the opening track is pure
Death Metal with some brutal hints, they intentionally led you astray making you think you’re in for good and catchy yet generic
Death Metal based on
Cannibal Corpse or
Sinister. But then again comes Blog Hyenaism, which I suspect deals with those suckers leeching the scene by downloading records from some rip off blogspots... and here the “nice”
Death Metal displayed previously gives way to more varied influences ranging from some energetic mixture of
Engorged’ extreme Speed
Metal and
Macabre’s humorous Grindcore.
Death Metal vocals have a new more “Hardcore” companion which gives some added and welcome energy.
And from now on, the cataclysm is unleashed upon you. Each tracks brings more fury, more catchiness and groove than the previous one. Add to this a very nice and powerful production, and you'll find yourself wanting to throw bricks at the face of everyone in a 2 metre radius around you. Yes, it's that good!
Say, remember the warning about not letting yourself be fooled by their moniker? Better not forget it. Not only these Czech metalheads know how to write some freaking catchy songs that will have you bang your heads in no time but their lyrics are not hollow and deal with societal issues as well. So you might think
Napalm Death or better still
Phobia, with whom they share some musical aspects except
Disfigured Corpse knows not to be obnoxious and display that very Czech sense of humor often found in
Metal bands from this country.
All in all, this is a great album. Actually one of the best I got to listen to this year. My only complaint is the photoshopped cover art which kind of sucks... It's cheesy at best...
Past this faux pas, you’re in for some musical wreckage, happy energetic
Metal laden with furious riffing, vocals and an exacerbated sense of groove but yet still conscious and committed and not hollow like the thousands of bands we deal on an everyday basis. Some great release from Crystal Productions which you should definitely acquire if you’re into any one of the aforementioned bands.
Brilliant!
