'Fraticide' is a nasty, sludgy piece of death metal; 4 grimy tracks of aural hatred from Italian death metallers
Mass Obliteration. The demo is old school style death metal, capturing a similar atmosphere to early
Morbid Angel or
Dismember. I've reviewed a number of bands from Italy recently, and they seem to have quite a burgeoning scene of quality releases in a variety of metal genres, could this be another?
It is only a demo, but I think
Mass Obliteration have a bit of potential to create a good full length. 'Fratricide', while nothing overly ground breaking or new, is a solid release; it captures a great raw sound and feeling that a lot of death metal lacks these days. It is much more organic than the more stale, mechanical death metal you see these days. Raging opener 'Mashom' sets the scene, a bile spewing tornado of riffs and growls. Second track 'The
Remains of
Hate' is probably the best here, although 'Nekare' has some nice melodic lead lines hidden in amongst the blast. The theme here is brotherly conflict, especially related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, which is a noble cause to write about. Whether the message gets across is open to each person's interpretation but it is certainly a more original choice of subject matter.
I think if
Mass Obliteration can write themselves a quality debut full length, they could be regarded quite well. 'Fratricide' shows they have the ability to do this; maybe some tweaks to the lyrical input and song writing and they could do rather well. No reason why not at least.
