Brilliant and refreshing. Divide are ready to conquer!

Death Metal never ceases to surprise me. Bad, sometimes good surprises, but I always remain in the same state of mind as when I was 17 years old and immersing myself in this budding genre which is now over 20 years old. While some bands left a lifelong legacy but could not keep with expectations, there are still new bands being born just about everyday.

Divide form Germany is a rather new band. Now, if you’ve followed more or less the Death Metal scene in the last few years, you know for sure that there is this “Divide” (haha) between partisans of Brutal Death Metal and old-school revivalists. The latter getting more attention by the minute. Divide chose to be part of the "revival" league though they're somehow bringing a new welcome twist to it.

As more bands follow the steps of Dead Congregation or Father Befouled seeking a “purer” Death Metal that owes much to legendary behemoths Incantation and Immolation, Divide strays away from "raw" and goes in the direction of old-school Death Metal that is well produced. Influences are varied and numerous, and among others most prominently you'll hear mid- Death, early Gorguts or even their fellow countrymen Morgoth (which to be perfectly frank was always very close to Death anyway) especially on the track “Divide et Empera" which has a very distinct "Pits of Utumno" feel.

As this eponymous release is only a self-released EP, it gives you a brief but coherent overview of the band’s possibilities. Production is rather nice and modern in the non-pejorative modern kind of way and it gives them strength and power which some newer bands lack and make up for with "raw" atmospheres. Technically the band is on par with the best bands out there so all in all, you get a very convincing record from these newcomers. Something I would have not expected from a band that's not even 2 years old.

Maybe, yes, there’s always a maybe, they could bring more fury in, more madness. But that would only compliment my tastes and I know that there's a few pals out there that would be perfectly satisfied with the result displayed here. This record is available on cd-r from the band so get involved and support them!

Brilliant and refreshing.
