A great Black Metal split!

Days Of Our Lives

Days of Our Lives is a Depressive / Suicidal Black Metal solo project founded in mid / late 2010 by Gibraltarian musician Ayperos.
He aims to paint a dark picture of his feelings from his experiences in his life through his music.

The first thing I have to say about these 2 tracks is that while listening to them throughout, no matter how many times I heard it, there was always a persistent cold presence, so cold it would make my hairs stand on end like I was stood out in the snow without anything to keep me warm. This is what I really liked about Days Of Our Lives because when I listen to this style of music I always love the coldness. There's also quite a desolate sound in there which is quite an amazing feeling. To write music with such feeling and presence takes a lot of emotion, creativity and passion.

Though one thing I wasn't so sure on about this sound is the distorted guitar in the first track. I didn't think it quite fit with the piano enough. It probably would have sounded better with more melody in the guitar and maybe some vocals which I think is what this track was missing.

But I do think this fit perfectly with the title and meaning of this split and that it was a chillingly cold introduction to the release.
The quality, coldness, creativity and passion that went into this is what I love about it and I'm definitely going to be listening to this more than a few times.

Shadow Frost*

Shadow Frost* is a one man Black Metal project formed by Silence to reflect his personal hatred and misanthropy with a classic and raw Black Metal sound.

A classic Black Metal sound is definitely what I heard from Shadow Frost*! Such a raw sound that, if you heard it and didn't know anything about it you'd probably think it's old underground Black Metal band that recorded it years ago.

"I am Soil" has such a traditional Black Metal sound. I absolutely love the raw, distorted sound here. I think the vocals are my favourite thing about this track; they have such a piercing, soul-devouring sound in them and sounds like a psychotic, venomous demon. The guitars are nothing special but the tempo and distortion they add to the song I think makes it that much more of a hateful and venomous song; I do really like the chorus riff though! And the keyboards also add that extra ingredient to make the track that much more brilliant.

When I saw that Dunkelheit had been covered I was so fucking happy because it is one of my favourite tracks of all time and I knew that from hearing the previous track that Shadow Frost* would do a great job at covering such a legendary song.

Well I certainly wasn't wrong there because the whole cover is just perfect! Silence really put his soul into this cover which I can tell he does in all of his music.

The vocals are just as awesome and hateful as the last track which really gives the cover a unique sound. The guitars are done brilliantly with a really cool distortion sound. The drums were done perfectly too. But what I liked most of all is the keyboards, I was pleased that Silence didn't try to emulate the exact Burzum sound, but instead, put his own unique touch to it which I thought made this cover sound so different to the others I've heard.

I was very impressed with the Shadow Frost* sound because a lot of bands claim to sound like "classic Black Metal" but most of them really can't recreate the classic sound, but he really manages to pull it off very well! Personally, this is my favourite section of the album but that's just down to my passion for the more classic, raw Black Metal sound and of course, the Burzum Cover.

Demoniacal

Demoniacal were previously a one man Black Metal project hailing from the United Kingdom but now has a full line up including Amarth on vocals, Razakel on guitar (Baalberith frontman) and Valefar on drums (Baalberith drummer).

Although the sound levels are a little off with the vocals being so loud and the drums being a touch too quiet, I thought these 2 tracks were great! Musically, the guitars are heavy in the first track with a lot of melody thrown in and the drums are what really gets you headbanging along with the great riffs in there. I really liked the intro riff of "Black Page of Suffering".
The second track, "Endless Misery" has a little more of a Doom sound which I actually prefer to hear from Demoniacal. I love how it goes from the Doom sound and then speeds up to a faster pace with more of a Thrash Metal style. Again, the guitar was brilliant and even more so in this track because I prefer the melodic riffs here. The drums had a lot of depth in their sound in this track which I thought added to it perfectly.
The vocals in both tracks were very demonic and maniacal which is great considering the band's name! They added a very hellish feel to the music which completed their great sound.

Demoniacal's sound is very hectic which is what I think is the best kind of Metal. I mean, who wants Metal to be overly clean and polished? Some people prefer that but not me personally. The sound was great and the music was well written with a maniacal purpose; the levels need sorting out a little but that was the only problem I noticed with them, despite that the tracks were awesome to listen to.

Overview

Overall, I think this split album was a great release that got me more familiar with these great underground bands. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and reviewing it!

Rating: 8/10
