Generic as fuck deathcore isn't my forte, in fact I fucking loathe the genre. Cookie cutter breakdowns mixed with weak as shit gutturals and painfully generic riffing just doesn't do anything for me, but there's plenty of people out there who enjoy this style, but they're scene kids who love the breakdowns so their opinion is invalid.

I'm still struggling to fathom why I actually decided to download this album, it had a fairly high score on Rateyourmusic score and the genre tags listed as well as deathcore were brutal death metal and melodic death metal. After listening to this album I'm struggling to see how on earth anyone could pick up the brutal death metal label from listening to this sleep induncing album. There's nothing particularly heavy about Black Heart Market, it's just breakdown after breakdown with the occassional melodic riff which doesn't do anything to alleviate the ever emerging threat of pure uncontrollable boredom. If that doesn't sound bad enough, wait for the occassional nu metal influence most noticeable in the track Grimy, the clean vocals are so bad and would be fucking hilarious if they wasn't this nauseating. He sounds like the bastard child of Corey Taylor and Frankie Palmeri when he does this spoken word delivery. It's absolutely horrible and just comes across as immature and whiny, which is a problem I have way too much with bands of this caste. The other vocal deliveries are pretty atrocious as well, the screams take on the same style as that of early Chelsea Grin, that bitchy and whining screaming that is paper thin, lacking any sense of power behind it. I really do not understand the appeal of vocals, at all. The growls aren't that bad, but they sure as generic as hell, nothing worth mentioning on this front.

Musically this band is about as generic as they come, breakdowns are unfortunately aplenty in Black Heart Market. Each song has numerous breakdowns which only serve to stretch my patience further, the worst offender is Dying Five Miles From Where You Were Born, apart from the ridiculous song title, it's jam packed of the most generic and useless breakdowns imaginable. They're unbelievable predictable, and don't try and tell me you didn't see the breakdown at the start coming from a mile off. Oh and it even ends with a breakdown! What a way to go out with a bang guys! This is by far the absolute worst track on the album and the most painfully uninspired song I've heard in a long time.

The actual riffs are painfully uninspired and lacklustre, they're unbelievably boring and generic, lacking any sense of identity or originality. It sounds like they got a book that detailed how to play the most generic deathcore and followed it word by word. The occassional “melodic” bits are terrible, melody is a hard thing to get right in the metal world and Hester Prynne have not made it work. They're bloody generic and boring, there's a decent riff near the end of Heat in which I can actually hear a substantial melodic death metal influence. It shows a small glimpse of promise for this band, because when they're not content to be rehashing the same ideas over and over again, they can create something quite enjoyable. Dancing With The Devil In Moonlight also has some pretty good riffs, the intro riff has a lot of energy behind it and it's fun to listen to, however it manages to lose it's power as the song goes on and on, and the band resorts back to their usual lacklustre approach. Once again, more wasted potential. Thankfully they manage to recuperate during the middle of the song where they break into another cool melodic death metal riff which then errupts into the most disjointed breakdown I HAVE EVER FUCKING LISTENED TO. A great riff ruined by more mind numbing deathcore genre conventions, when will deathcore bands learn to not fuck up their songs? Seriously, how can anyone think ruining the momentum of a song that was going pretty well is a good idea? I just don't get it. Oh and not to mention this song once again ends with a breakdown. Way to shit all over any potential you had lads.

Sunday Rain has a great introduction riff actually, it's highly melodic, fast and energetic. It's really good to listen to, yet after about 20 seconds the bands lack of imagination rears its ugly head and once again they manage to shit all over it. No surprises there. Thankfully they manage to recuperate by including that great riff again, it's a really good riff and I wish the band wrote more like it. They could go along way by focusing on the riffs instead of the breakdowns. Sunday Rain also contains the vocalists finest moments, where he shouts in the most angst ridden way imaginable “To everyone I love just know I've always wanted so much more!” The band has absolutely no way of recovering after this nose dive as the band lose any sense of credibility after this ridiculous display of, er poignant lyrical genius.

Red In The Water is by far the, uhm “highlight” of the album, it opens up with a long and relaxing clean passage, then goes into sort of emotional distorted guitars with a nice sense of melody about it. It's ridiculously contrived and disjointed but in the context of this album it's the greatest thing ever. Not to mention the piano with Darth Vader rapping over it at the end! Pure Genius!

So to sum it up, boring and generic deathcore that has some hilarious moments, most noticeably the presence of an infamous sith lord to provide his excellent rapping skills at the end. Who would have thought Darth Vader would be such a good rapper?! Apart from the Darth Vader cameo appearance this album has absolutely nothing to offer and this band really needs to remove their collective heads out of their collective rectums and realize something just isn't working for them. Try harder guys. Avoid like the plague.
