So, here it is, the new album of
Tarja Turunen will be out soon. Described as a capricious diva by her former comrades, she's returning to the charge with an album which may well eclipse a well-known Finnish band. Sounding more
Nightwish than
Nightwish? Well, the answer is of course yes. But no need entering the debate, or maybe juste a little...
When listening to this disc, it sounds like some persons made a big mistake in modifying a receipe so efficient until then. The first
Tarja's album is probably going to be a big success. Because, without being an absolute copy of the source, this disc grabs all the elements I liked so much in
Nightwish. Heavy riffs where expected and an important place let to the magnificient voice of
Tarja. Because, it was indeed clearly her voice which had generated the band's fame. Some may say the single "
I Walk Alone" is a bit too soft. Maybe, but at the same time the arrangements are elaborated and give a real character to this 2007 release. One will indeed find a quite powerful riff and a impressive instrumental pallet. Quite a lot of violin, some piano, the whole being hold by an efficient and resolulety metal rythmic section.
But when the disc becomes more feline, softer, this is Targa's voice which holds it all. She initiates very lyrical singing typical of what she was doing at her beginning with
Nightwish. I then rediscover the
Tarja I had a little lost with
Once. Of course, it is obvious that this time, she is the leader of the band, and she paddles her own canoe exactly where she intends. I want to do lyrical singing? So, be it, I do some. I guess I'm not going to be the only one happy hearing her at this level of excellence. She is described as a diva, but one must admit the beauty also knows how to fit in the melody as with the more melancholic "Oasis", where she sings through small precise touchs.
But not only happy being at her top, she has also been able to surround with big guys of the
Metal scene. Namely, we have Doub Wimbish (
Living Colour, Rolling Stones), Mike Terrana (playing in bands bigger one than the other), a certain Alex Scholpp, a brother and so on.
The sound is very powerful. A big, heavy sound perfectly in place and each instrument is shown to its advantage. I would have loved a bit more bass-lines, but it is only because I'm a big fan of
Doug Wimbish.
So here it is, the competition and the comparison can now start. Hearing these five titles, I already know where my prognostics go. One has now to wait for the full-length album and above all to wait for the concert in Decembre already forecasted as a big event.
