Biografia : Uruk-Hai (AUT)

URUK-Hai was founded by Hugin (HROSSHARSGRANI, ELISABETHA) in the autumn of 1999. Everything began with Hugin's work on new HROSSHARSGRANI-material, which was planned to be entitled “Uruk-Hai”. After finnishing the production he sent out six advance-copies to a few friends and after listening to the material for himself for a couple of times, he decided that the stuff could not be released under the HROSSHARSGRANI-monicker. So the first URUK-HAI-demo was born. It was entitled “In Durins Halls” and - equipped with a new sound and some bonusmaterial – recently released by ECLIPSE LIVE PROMULGATION from Germany. During the recording process of ‘In Durins Halls' and still under the name HROSSHARSGRANI Hugin also composed the 78 minute long song ‘Quenta Silmarillion' (wo which a newer version was also recently released as strictly limited CDR via the bulgarian label A.M.F. Production).
The first real URUK-HAI (rehearsal)demo ‘Elbenwald' was recorded in the cold winter of 1999/2000 and was released as a label-split between lithuanias BEVERINA-Production and ELVEN WITCHCRAFT. A new sound called PAGAN BATTLE AMBIENT was invented and mixed with a few black metal-elements. A few more rehearsals followed. ‘Darkness' and ‘Orcish Battle Hymns' were both released from the french cult-label CHANTELOUP CREATIONS: The ‘Lost Songs' from the ‘Elbenwald'-sessions were released under the title ‘Elbentanz' and as a limited CDR from the english label ODIUM-Records in 2003. A further release, the Rehearsal-Compilation ‘Battle Yells' was released by the italien WERWOLF PRODUCTION: In 2004 Hugin decided to release also the other rehearsal-sessions recorded during the past five years. ‘Battle Magic', ‘Long Forgotten Tales' and ‘Honour' were again released by WERWOLF PRODUCTION and the split-tape with ARKILLERY with the title ‘Von Blinkenden Schwertern Im Reiche Des Nordens' was released by ther german ECLIPSE OF LIVE PROULGATION. EISENWALD Tonschmiede released all the material from 2003 with the title ‘Barbarians (Orcish Battle Hymns Pt. II)' as a bloodred-CD in a poster-cover with a professional layout and a split Tape with VINTERRIKET named ‘Nazgul'.
In 2004 the Spanish DRAMA COMPANY (a sublabel of BATTLEFIELD-Records) finally released the first official URUK-HAI-CD „A Night in The Forest“. The CD contains one epic 72 minutes long song of pure darkness – a mystical journey through the woods of Fangorn. A further split-CDR wit WOODLANDS EDGE followed. The american label SUBTERRANEAN SURREAL Records released it with the title “Land Of The Shadows”. Early 2005 sees the release of the second album “The Battle” (again on DRAMA COMPANY). As the title implicits it is the soundtrack of a battle, especially portraying the tristesse of the fields of honour after battle and the glorious return of the fallen warriors. The track “Songs From The Woods” was released as tape with full colour cover at the German label ECLIPSE OF LIVE PROMULGATION – limited to 88 copies only!
The year 2005 – blood freezes in the veins at the sound of clenching steel, a further, more giant battle is fought. The way of the warrior is sealed, created out of flesh and steel, baptized in fire and ice the warlord URUK-HAI rises with iron force to fight his battle in the land of shadows. Dark Pagan Ambient hymns, mystic and bombastic battlesounds lead you to deadly moors, rise up high in the sky and chase the dark creatures through enchanted woods. Mighty atmospheres, wardrums, cymbals and fanfares build a symphony like the ride of a Valkyrie.
URUK-HAIs third work is again a well-done symbiose of heroic battle hymns and radio-play-like passages full of mystic characters. An epic tale that crosses the borders of known arts in a world beyond, where flesh, steel and courage not yet lie hidden in the shadows. “The Battle” is a new ode to war, a further manifest of the violence of the sword, an album which will attract every single pagan warrior. (again released through DRAMA COMPANY in Spain)

“-2-“ the second split album with the german band VINTERRIKET will guide the listener through a mercyless “Viking Journey” – this album contains also a BURZUM cover song of each band! It´s URUK-HAI´s sequel to the “The Battle” album so to say. Here is a little story to imagine this concept:

Fire and Wind come from the Sky, from the Gods of the Sky.
But your God is Crom, and he lives in the Earth.
Once Giants lived in the Earth, and in the darkness of chaos they fooled Crom, and took from him the enigma of Steel.
Crom was angered and the Earth shook, and Fire and Wind struck
down these Giants, and threw their bodies onto the wathers.
But in their rage, the Gods forgot the secret of Steel and left it on the Battlefield.
And we who found it, are just men, Not Gods Not Giants Just Men
URUK-HAI was thought as a musical portrait of several landscapes of Middle Earth and a dark insight on the various characters from the world of J.R.R. Tolkien. The combination of epic soundscapes and orcish music makes it hard to describe the sound-patterns. Even more because Hugin plans to expand the soundscapes to themes of the northern mythology. URUK-HAI is not only an ambient project since the compositions also contain black metal-elements and several sound-F/X to increase the atmosphere. Sounds of nature, speech-samples and battle noises definitely find their place in the musical world of URUK-HAI. To sum it up: PAGAN BATTLE AMBIENT!
