Ah,
Wykked Wytch. One of the most confusing bands I've ever heard of. Mainly because bands usually either start off strong and become worse, or they stay the same.
Wykked Wytch is that rare band that started off awfully and then progressed into something much, much better.
Their first album, "
Something Wykked This Way Comes," has probably one of the lowest scores on
Spirit-of-
Metal that I've ever seen and it surprised the hell out of me (it currently has a 5/20, but the first time I saw it the score was 3/20). I kind of like the album, actually. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty bad - but I sort of enjoy the badness, if you will. Kind of like how you enjoy a bad movie because it's bad and you know it.
Their next few albums had horrible scores as well: "
Angelic Vengeance" with only an 11/20 and "
Nefret" with a measly 9/20 (as of July 4,
2012).
Why am I telling you all of this?? Because it's important for this particular review ...
Wykked Wytch must have done something right (out of fucking nowhere) because their last album, "
Memories of a Dying Whore" (I love that title), scored a 17/20.
And now with this year's "
The Ultimate Deception,"
Wykked Wytch has produced their greatest album by far. They seriously need to continue doing whatever it is that they're doing because it's working. They've progressed quite a bit and may just end up gaining more and more popularity within the metal community.
First off, if you didn't know already, the band is fronted by a Turkish woman by the name of Ipek. I think she was one of the main reasons people in the past disliked the band so much. Her voice sounds like a troll at the peak of strangulation in some of their older songs, but it works here, and fits better with what the band members are playing. She also doesn't just screech, she growls quite low on this one. The entire album is both catchy and melodic. Ipek's vocals are no longer an extreme earache, but eventually grow on you to the point of impressiveness. She can actually sing, too. I was very surprised by this album after I heard it and some of the songs and choruses managed to get stuck in my head (which is always a good thing). After all, the only other album by
Wykked Wytch that I ever heard was "
Something Wykked This Way Comes" (I got that for seventy-five cents from someone).
I think some of the few complaints I have about this one are these: the track "Ecstasy." I absolutely hate pointless filler tracks on CDs/albums that are either just sounds or noise or barely music. Just pretentious bullshit. Same goes for uninspired introductory tracks. No one listens to that shit, so you might as well not even fucking record it since everyone (including myself) just fucking skips over it in the first place. It's a waste of time and a waste of space and the more and more I see it everywhere the more and more it pisses me the fuck off. So, there's that. I always take points off an entire album for that fucking shit. I hate it that fucking much.
Also, there's a cover by the band
Metallica. Now, I know I'm gonna take heat for this, but I never liked
Metallica. I always felt that they were severely overrated and none of their songs ever reached above a yawn to me. But,
Wykked Wytch actually did a pretty damn good job with their cover of "Fade to Black" on this. So, why is it a complaint?? Because it's considered to be part of the overall album and I like cover songs better when they're added as a bonus track since most albums are usually linked based on the album's core theme. There is no theme here, but the cover honestly feels very out of place on the album and out of place in the album altogether.
So, that's it. In summary,
Wykked Wytch's best album by far is "
The Ultimate Deception." It's technical, melodic, catchy, and above all - unpredictable. A fun listen and the replay value is quite high. I give "
The Ultimate Deception" by
Wykked Wytch an 18/20.
So I would disagree with you that it's a rare occurrence for a band to get better over time after their professional music career starts.
