You will find that Coffin Birth has been labeled Black Metal on Spirit of Metal and when I took up the request for their release The Miracle of Death, it was advertised as old-school Blackened Thrash Metal.

Well, genres are one thing and you often find bands that think of themselves as Death Metal playing some harsh version of Heavy Metal or Deathcore. Coffin Birth, in my opinion, is rather a good ole Speed Metal band with lots of Heavy Metal accents. I guess you could add the “blackened” epithet but then again it would only suit their lyrics and not too much their music just like it does for bands like Italy’s Mortuary Drape.

Musically, it is Speed Metal, that « bastard » genre that once encompassed anything heavier than plain Heavy Metal. So yes, you’ll hear some Thrash riffing and also good doses of melodic soli which make up for great music. The kind of music that is seldom played nowadays. The singer displays some punkish vocals that lean on the Black Metal side but then again are too distantly related to the genre to clearly fit in it. At times he almost reminds of Bobby Ellsworth though I’ve never been a big fan of his voice

Still the music is high quality. Guitars are really outstanding and riffing is top-notch. Give a few keyboards parts that give this "Horror Metal" feel often found in the Italian scene (Death SS, Mortuary Drape) and you end up with something that is not too far away from a thrashy version of King Diamond. Fans of the Ride the Lightning era will also appreciate these Metallica hints though it's a lot heavier than the San Francisco based band.

Lyrically, with tracks like "The Pain Of Being Dead" or "Spiders Of Insomnia", you know you're in for some cliche lyrics but hell they do fit nicely with the music and the overall feel.

Canada’s Coffin Birth definitely requires a few listen and some open mind to get into it. People most familiar with the present extreme metal scene might be a little offset at first by such music but once you take the time to really listen to it you will find it is rich and gratifying.
