Holodomor are hungry for violence and angry at the whole world

What happens when you put one Pole and three Englishmen in the same room? No, this is not some silly Polish joke and the answer is simple enough: Holodomor. Holodomor is the word that describes the man-made famine that killed millions in Ukraine in the early 30s and was orchestrated by Staline. You know what they say... From Russia with love.

Hungry for violence and certainly angry at the whole world are the guys of Holodomor. Though only a MCD, Témoignages de la Gnose Terrestre displays five tracks in less than twenty minutes leaving you restless with an appetite for destruction. Playing Death Metal mixed with a few Black Metal elements, I feel the best way to describe the band’s music is this: the technical mastery and velocity of late Azarath and the sheer madness and brutality of late Stillborn.

You probably found out by now that that even though there’s only one Pole within the band, the sound is resolutely Polish. Just like on Stillborn’s Los Asesinos del Sur, the vocals are neither fully Death Metal nor Black Metal. They’re just utterly madman’s screams that convey hatred, madness, despair and anger all at the same time. I’m pretty certain that this particular element of Holodomor will be for most a love it or hate it thing. Needless to say I loved it.

Musically speaking, besides two tracks over four minutes, the rest is under the three minutes mark. Holodomor does not develop ideas the way most classical Death Metal bands do. You can feel this urgency, this need to vomit and spew hatred as much as possible in the shortest time possible. No fine theatricals, just pure unadulterated venom to strike at the heart of the weak. This is a war machine, either you follow or you’re left for dead on the side of the road. No fucking quarter. I already mentioned Azarath as a main influence, I don’t think you need more than this to know what kind of Metal you’re dealing with.

Weaknesses? None. Well, one. This is way too short. I could have coped with another dozen tracks like those five and try not to sodomize the replay button. Go get this, now, while supplies last, like they say, and until Holodomor delivers the next blow, which will hopefully be in the form of a full-length debut.
