Featuring ex-members of bands such as Immolation, Goreaphobia and Grand Belial's Key, Masada can be seen as a supergroup of sorts. Don't be fooled by the band logo and the album art into thinking that this is going to be another amateurish thrash metal album, as Masada presents to the metal community their brand of death metal in the form of their debut demo, Suffer Mental Decay.

A powerful blast of double bass drums hits the listener hard as the title track Suffer Mental Decay begins, before the brutal and tortured vocals of Cazz Grant enters. With the production quality and the heavy riffs presented on the track, this is old school death metal without a doubt, infused with a tinge of technicality. The drumming of Craig messes with the listeners' heads, including fills where one would expect none and not including one where one would expect one to be, yet this is precisely what makes Masada such a unique entity.

The unique riffs that are presented on the introduction of Toxic Unreality instantly remind listeners of technical bands such as Demilich, along with the dark and heavy atmosphere that surrounds the music. The clearly audible and rumbling bass in the background throughout the release certainly adds to the overall enjoyment of the music, as it serves more than just another rhythm instrument with lead spots given to it on Toxic Unreality, with the band making use of it to build up the climax before all hell breaks loose. The addition of spoken samples on this track seemed slightly out of place and unneeded, but this does little to harm the quality of the music of Masada.

The portfolio of the individual band members are certainly not for show only as they have already proven in a short 6 minute with their Suffer Mental Decay demo. My only complaint with this release? Too short, way too short!
