Vanilla Rex is a band coming from Germany, a country well know for its true and speed metal bands. Except that the band isn't evoluting on the same scene, man can even say that there is a million light years away from the traditionnal german scene : more progressive, it's impossible! In Fact, VR is more influenced by Dream Theater, Symphony X or Savatage than by the power metal made by Helloween, Paragon, Metalium or Gamma Ray. This is one of the numerous positive points of VR, because the pleasure of listening to the teutonic "speederies" has been replaced by some an indigestion. A second german progressive metal band is really welcomed. VR, as its counterpart from Vanden Plas, brings a pleasant freshness and could confirm, I hope, a tendency to the "progressivisation" of german metal, which would really be benefic, not only for the bands as VR, but, also, for the utterly german metal scene, by bringing more diversity. But let's go back, now, to 'Shadows of Insanity'. What to say about this album? First of all, this is progressive one...Then, that, seen the quality of compositions, the band is able to seriously concurrence its new-yorkians elders from DT : originality is here and the interpretation is strong. That can to seem impressive for a 1st demo destined to canvass for labels and medias, but, it surely pleased to Rock Hard Germany, which has devoted a track on its august's sampler to Vanilla Rex, a title from their first album, "Awaken The Sphinx", and also to me. Which could seem boring with Dream Theater, who plays more on the technic side of music than on the emotionnal one, is it absolutely not with Vanilla Rex. No trace of dead activity. About the sound, nothing to say, only that the sound of the snare drum is a bit "strange" and the guitars relatively mixed "in the background". Man can feel that the band has a strong musical background, as every musician arrives to make us to feel on cloud nine silmutaneously on the complexity and on the carried emotions. The singer is really good and has a great exactness on his parts. A promising beginning! If you're a progressive metal lover, don't let pass this talented band, which really deserve all your attention...
