Moribund Records has a penchant for scavenging through the world's metal scrap yards for junkers to fix up and put on the market. They're not looking for hot rods, they're looking for hearses. But they got a stolen getaway car with this find.
In late 2007, they found this 2 man black metal band from Sweden, who had just released a shakey album, with Humanity's Plague Productions. They saw some potential in their maligned style and signed them as fast as they could. They released their second album,
Malignant, which was also their first album with
Moribund records in the spring of 2008.
They strive to play early 1990's style Scandinavian black metal. They are trying to alternate slow tempos with faster tempos, to keep it interesting. Most of the songs on
Scorn are long, four of them clocking in at almost 10 minutes. Their album art is done by guitarist AE, he's no
Leonardo Da Vinci, but I've seen a lot worse album art. They think that the songs on
Scorn are more complex, than those on their previous albums, because their songwriting skills have improved. They haven't convinced me of that.
As The Mountains
Collapse has a catchy guitar hook, sounding almost like
Melechesh. But then the rest of the almost 10 minute song sounds like a slower and far less intricate version of the
Gehenna song,
The Killing Kind. The rest of the songs on this album sound something like a mix of
Burzum and
Azaghal, but played at a medium pace. The vocals sound like some melancholic bellowing with echoes. The guitar sounds really rough like
Horna or
Azaghal, but rarely sounds impressive. There is nothing flashy or outstanding on this album, aside from the catchy guitar hook on the first song.
I listened to their previous album,
Malignant, online. It sounded a lot more lively, with its more inconsistent melodies. Those songs sounded a lot better, than these on their current offering, which were too dull. What the fuck were they thinking? How can they expect to entertain the metalheads without lots of killer guitar solos or hooks? They were almost going in the right direction with
Malignant, but they're going straight toward the bargain bins with
Scorn.
