Róka Hasa Rádió is the first album I've heard from
Thy Catafalque. The name kept popping up. So I eventually decided to look them up, the first track I heard from
Thy Catafalque was Szervetlen. The mix of Atmospheric music, Avant-garde and Black
Metal blew me away. After constant replaying I had to get the album and what I heard wasn't disappointing. The fusions of styles worked unimaginably well. How often do you hear Hungarian Folk music mixed with Black
Metal? Not every day I assume. The point I'm getting at is that
Thy Catafalque produce some truly unique Black
Metal, if that is the correct term to use as
Thy Catafalque sound miles apart from other Black
Metal acts for example
Gorgoroth and
Urgehal.
The first thing I'd like to point out is the level of diversity that this album has to offer. It goes from the heavier more aggressive sounding tracks such as Szervetlen to the atmospheric more melodic tracks such as Kabócák, Bodobácsok.
The vocals are also worthy of mentioning, all lyrics are sung in their native Hungarian which I like as it seems the man behind
Thy Catafalque is sticking to his roots instead of singing in English to appeal to a larger audience. He also performs harsh vocals which do their job but aren't worthy of noting as they are often buried in the mix.
The guitars on this album are heavily distorted, an unusual choice for a band with a large amount of keyboard usage, fortunately it works. The guitars aren't overpowering and in your face, but they are loud enough to be easily distinguishable. The riffs are also very diverse and varied, on this album we get
Doom Metal sounding passages and more straight forward Black
Metal to a distorted wall of sound.
The keyboards are easily the highlight for me, from being purely for atmospheric usage to being the focal parts of some songs, the level of variety in the keyboards alone is staggering to say the least. If you're the type of
Metal
Head who can't stand keyboards then you will not like this at all, they are very thick in the mix and can easily be heard. Drum and Bass playing isn't worthy of note, I could barely hear the bass most of the time and the drums were programmed, they fill their roles fine but apart from that nothing outstanding.
I recommend this album to anyone interested in Avant-garde/ Experimental
Metal or if you're looking for some forward thinking Black
Metal I urge you to pick this up. It may take a few spins to get into, but once you get in you uncover a truly remarkable piece of work. Brilliant 20/20.
