Heavy
Metal from Southeastern
Europe meets the Heavy
Metal style of the Southeastern
United States, with the advent of
Bastardolomey. This Bulgarian band is one of the metal world's best kept secrets. Their music is being publicly played through a variety of mediums in their homeland. Last summer they had the honor of performing as an opening act, before "The Big Four Of Thrash" in Sofia. So now, I've got the honor of checking out The
Plastic Pig Society, which is their debut album.
Initially, the music thrashes at medium tempo with a laid back style, like
Valient Thorr. Then some of the songs are carved up with choppy rhythms like
Prong. Many of the songs transmute into groovier styles like
Hellyeah, or
Rob Zombie. But the music usually stays within the range of southern fried Heavy
Metal.
The guitarists do a very good job of manipulating their strings against the fret boards, to produce some amazing sounds. They play plenty of whining melodies like Lynrd Skynrd, as well as some funkier strains like
Alice In Chains. Occasionally they break down into some similar arrangements to
Corrosion Of Conformity.
Track 7(The
Devil's Band) stands out with squawky guitar picking, that is driven by hard bass lines. The guitar work on that song sounds almost as artistic as some of those that were done by guitar greats like; Joe Perry or Jimmy Page. Tetris For A
Psycho features some boogie woogie styled bass rhythms, that sound like something from classic
Molly Hatchet. It should be a great dance song for couples in the backwoods of the South.
Ivanchev is a power drummer, whose energetic beats hit the full spectrum of tones. He gets a very nice sound from his high quality drum set. His skills remind me of Herb, from
Primus. Nufry has a fun loving vocal approach, which is very comparable to Valient Himself, from
Valient Thorr. Sometimes he displays a sense of humor, like Mike Muir from
Suicidal Tendencies, or Frank Zappa.
Sounding crisp and clear, the quality of this recording is first rate. It was very well produced and is highly polished. Although those traits might not be so desirable with Black
Metal, it works well with the Heavy
Metal genre, and helps to enhance the overall effect of this album. This music might sound too conservative for some tastes. But it is meant to be metal for the masses. Radio friendly and bumping their way up into the top 40 charts for sales.
Bastardolomey are very popular in Bulgaria and their music gets lots of airplay on their local radio stations. Their music has also been featured in many Bulgarian TV commercials, as well as in some movies. They are eager to take their work into the international markets. I'd like to see their videos played on MTV, to edge out the hip hop slop. They should be a big hit in the States, fans of
Valient Thorr will get a kick out of this album.
