Surprisingly from time to time a new band will come to my attention that has the tenacity to perk up my ears, making me take notice by playing music that moves me to my core. Music that stays in my truck’s CD player for week after week without any signs of being removed. One such band is Italy’s Thrash Metal/New Wave of British Heavy Metal up and comers Interceptor.

Interceptor’s debut One With The Beast…Meet with The Damned is a punchy little EP with just the right amount of vim and vigor to appease even the finickiest of metal aficionados. The EP begins with a nice and mellow little ditty entitled Intro, featuring a classically fueled orchestral piece, brimming with strings. But be not lulled into a false sense of the doldrums as the opening piece segues into 5 quintessential thrash metal anthems akin to a number of 80’s metal pioneers. My favorite is the 2nd cut 2012, which features a really cool mix of some real heavy guitar work, screaming vocals, with sampled news overdubs relating to the incident of 911. As I progressed through this EP, I heard elements from Metallica-Kill ‘Em All, Slayer-Show No Mercy, Overkill-Hello From The Gutter among others.

The musicianship on this EP is certainly performed with a great deal of precision and expertise. Drummer Leonardo Spillo De Donatis is quite frankly a human metronome. From start to finish, the double bass drumming from Leonarda is impressive to say the least. His partners in musical crime guitarists: Francesco Bucco and Christian D’Onofrio, play with a technical proficiency and feeling that not only pays homage to their influences, but could place them in this revered company of ax masters. Low end duties are handled with mastery and care by Lorenzo Mazzocco. Lastly, but certainly not with any disrespect to talent, the lead vocal duties are performed by Fausto Di Persio. Fausto could stand in for Bobby “Blitz” from Overkill any day of the week, which is a great thing if you ask me being a HUGE Overkill fan.

Interceptor isn’t raising the bar when it comes to thrash metal music, but they certainly aren’t lowering it either. Their cover of the Grim Reaper cult classic, See You In Hell, is a nicely done homage to a band with obvious influences on Interceptors aggressive sound. I enjoyed this record quite a lot and I think most of you will too. I for one am eagerly anticipating what Interceptor will do next.
