Bleaker, darker, better

In August 2012, I had reviewed Primal’s Deathzone and had found it original and intriguing but I was also wondering where the band would head next with its own singular blend of Black Metal. To put it bluntly, Deathzone was a curious record mixing True Black Metal with Satriani-like lead guitars. And as much as this could sound out of place, there was much to be loved (or hated, depending on how orthodox your tastes are).

PrimalOne, the sole mastermind of the band, decided this time to do everything all by himself. This was actually almost the case with Deathzone, except he had “delegated” the leads to Markiz and it was this addition that made Primal’s music so peculiar. Now all alone, it is safe to assume that what you will hear on Ob??d is what PrimalOne really wanted to record. Which already means that the melodic leads of Markiz have been taken out of the way and by doing so, the feeling given out by Ob??d is definitely more “classical” and a lot darker as well.

And mind you, it’s not just because those melodic leads disappeared in the process but overall, Primal got a lot darker, in both production and songwriting. It also got a lot more professional since I believe that PrimalOne improved on its production and musicianship skills and now can really deliver what he always wanted to do. Bleak, dark, cold Black Metal with a tendency to lean on the Doom Metal side of the spectrum.

This darkness is also emphasized by yet another change. Where all tracks and the album titles of Deathzone were written in English, Ob??d, which could be translated as either insanity or madness, is in Polish language. It’s as if PrimalOne rejected just about everything and shut himself away when recording Ob??d. The end result bringing a desolate atmosphere reinforced by an occult feeling which was absent from Deathzone.

If I were asked to choose between Deathzone and Ob??d in terms of quality and replay value, I would choose Ob??d in a second. Deathzone was endearing in terms of originality but some of the ideas were not that well delivered giving it an amateurish feel. This totally disappeared from Ob??d, which became hypnotizing at time. Some may complain about this new direction but I find it necessary for Primal to go higher and become a band to be counted with. Primal is not the next Mg?a but with Ob??d, it is sure heading in the right direction.
