If you are one of the people who adjudge the album just as soon as notice a glimpse of deathcore, metalcore, hardcore or just any –core, then shame on you! At least in this case. If there are any bands that can make people forget all the prejudice against the anythingcore, Resistance with its new album Lords of Torment is definitely one of them.

The album bubbles over with the pissed off attitude, heavy riffs and I’m not ashamed to admit that the quality in general. It is true that adorers of long, mellow, meaningful and deep poetic lyrics should better shot themselves than listen to this album, but it doesn’t really take from its worth, I would say that just conversely.

Don’t let yourself get confused by the quiet beginning of Requiem, the lead-off song, because just after a few seconds you are attacked by a smashing strike. As I mentioned, the lyrics are quite simple but all together it is something you wouldn’t mind at all. The rhythm in the songs changes very unviolently despite aggress of the whole record and everything from guitars to vocals, main as well as the backing ones, is very storming and doesn’t let you get bored.

The following Bleed Yourself is only a testimony of the qualities listed above.
The Supreme Being is a darker, heavier and more random, yet still it appeals rounded off. The following Hail flows very continuously, all despite the changes of rhythm and short minimalistic parts including only drums which immediately change back into the sonic storm.

F.Y.A. (fuck you all) sounds just as snarky as it can with such name and it actually really puts a part of the attitude inside of you, whether you want it or not. Behind Your Eyes sounds somehow old school and it is a very fast composition. The final line “goodbye” would sound more dramatic if it was in the utter finale of the song, anyway, it would be also more expectable, so whatever was the intention, it didn’t screw up anything.

The title song Lords of Torment is a very precious piece of work and what really makes it much better are the baking vocals on the right places at the right times. The whole atmosphere and mood created in these less than four minutes would compensate everything if the rest of the album was an absolute piece of sh*t, which of course fortunately is not.

Scars Never Die is as much unpathehic as the name may sound pathetically. At least if you don’t read the lyrics which don’t sound plumb quaintly but the narrating style a little stands out of the album, hard to say if in a good or bad way.
The repeating “Respect yourself, respect the others” in We Can Fight is a bit of change after “Fuck you all” but since in my opinion this song, with featuring vocals by Bruno Giannoccaro of Dark Sensation, is one of the best of the album, this is the one which deserves to get to the stage lights of the extreme music scene. And as the time goes by, I Can’t Stand is a well made finish, everything – dramatic, energetic, with original beginning and classy finish (Stop it now).

The album is surprisingly well listenable, full of energy and attitude, and those who have seen the band play live cannot deny that every single song of the album will sound amazing on the stage. It also has a perfect length and listening to this record doesn’t bore you, not a mite.
Well, and for all lovers of silly games there is a small bonus. You can open a booklet (my courtesy to the designer by the way) and try to play find-a-typo game. And no, it doesn’t deteriorate the whole appearance of this piece; on the contrary it adds even more credibility and soul to this already splendid creation.

ryan5 - 26 Kwiecień 2011: Interesting thing is that older metalheads, in some cases, despise -core & the "scene kids". (A.k.A fags, pussys, emos) Why is that? Older metalheads dont like new music, or is it the popularity that comes with -core styles that gets up older metalheads?
Nastasia - 29 Kwiecień 2011: Good question. Honestly i don't know, maybe they are used to the "pure" sound of the style and hate the changes. But not everyone is that narrow minded.
