Take melodic hardcore, metalcore and deathcore, throw them into a blender and then you have Burn The Weak!

Let the Strong Prosper is Burn The Weak’s debut EP and it was self released in 2011. From what is in this release, these guys are a melodic deathcore/metalcore band. They mix aspects and components of deathcore with the melodies and pace of a typical metalcore band. These guys are from Germany, which is black metal and generic hardcore territory. Yeah, there are some decent German “core” bands that come out now and again but not many actually get big, could this be the time? Is this EP the Prophecy? Will this EP reach enough people?

The first thing that strikes me after the decent intro is that this is definitely not one of those super chuggy deathcore bands who just play breakdowns all frikin day and call themselves “heavy as fuck”. But don’t worry guys, the music still packs enough punch to head bang to. For some reason, I’ve been witnessing many bands nowadays that incorporate a melodic hardcore atmosphere into metalcore music. Why did I randomly bring that up, because these guys have it, that’s why! There is a particular style of riffling that melodic hardcore bands use which has only been utilized widely only just recently. It’s a little hard to explain exactly what it is but it promotes an uplifting feeling when heard. Some patriotic “core” fans might not like this style but I welcome it because it adds a little more variety to a claustrophobic genre of music. Bands such as Of Whispers use this, and at times you hear a few snapshots of this in August Burns Red’s sound as well.

Every single “core” fan out there knows that one of the prime ingredients to any song with little upsetting emotion is the breakdowns. Whether it’s hardcore, deathcore or metalcore you have gotta love it, the best thing about the breakdowns in this EP is that they aren’t just the same boring half assed style that is common throughout the entire underground scene. There is almost every breakdown style from quick hardcore style breakdowns to extremely heavy bass dropping deathcore/metalcore breakdowns. And no, there isn’t only one that is worth listening to, they all are pretty decent even the one from the intro.

The last aspect of their music that I’d like to point out is their song writing, for an underground band, these guys have actually done pretty good job. The transitions are smooth, each instrument doesn’t over power the one before it and song structure is almost perfect. I think the most important one out of all those would have to be their transitions. From what I’ve heard, these guys don’t sound like that they are aiming to be all out brutality. Chaos plays a massive role in deathcore bands nowadays, I have no idea why but I like seeing (hearing) bands that don’t just follow the suit of everyone else. But I don’t think I should classify their song writing as deathcore, because of the organised song structure. Also, melodic deathcore is typically fast and very technical because they combine the speed and vibe of melodic death metal with deathcore. For example, As Blood Runs Black and old Here Comes The Kraken. I’d say that these guys have more of a metalcore vibe to them and it’s mainly due to their song structure.

Like I’ve mentioned before, their song structure is absolutely top notch and their song writing is excellent. What I love most about the music however, is the execution. They have put everything together like pieces of a puzzle and the result is some flawless music when it comes to when they present. This band doesn’t just sound like a whole bunch of people playing instruments at their own accord, it really sounds like a single unit. The best example of this is in the track Praying For Savoir, it’s probably one of the best structured songs that I’ve heard in a long time.

Instrumentally, these guys aren’t anything special. Sure they are all capable, but there is nothing here that has that wow factor to it when it comes to these guy’s musical talents. Despite what I just stated, the thing that makes this band work isn’t that they can play at 100mph or have the fastest solos. It’s their song writing and showmanship that makes their music standout.

Burn the Weak’s vocalist uses a wide range of techniques from low hardcore style growls to deathcore style screams. But he doesn’t go really high and really low, he also does everything that it’s in between. The way he does his vocals suite their musical style very well, he carries his voice really well and doesn’t shorten them. Best of all (and I hate it when deathcore/metalcore bands do this) he doesn’t try to sing so fast that it almost sounds like a terrible rap/screamo song. That’s what Brokencyde is for. Also, I think the pitch and the tone of his voice is almost perfect for their musical style as well. I mean, he would be perfectly capable of singing for a post hardcore or a brutal deathcore band but there is just something about his voice and the band’s sound that makes the two connect.

Ahh yes, now to the drumming. The drumming is also very suited to their styles. They are not too fast and they aren’t too slow, they are just about right. Just like the vocalist, the drummer doesn’t try to exceed his capabilities by drumming as fast or as brutal as possible. The music isn’t very technical like a typical deathcore band, and it’s the drumming that is responsible for this. But the actual beat of the drumming is very powerful. I’m not sure if it’s just me noticing, but there are way too many bands out there that seem to have a lot of trouble recording the drumming on their album or EP. Well, these guys are only underground and this is only an EP and yet they have seeming perfect drumming. I don’t think any other band out there has that excuse anymore. Although the drumming is quite powerful, it doesn’t over power any of the other instruments that much. In saying that, I believe the drumming is the most outstanding instrument in this band because it seems to hold the music together nice an tightly.

The guitar work is pretty decent as well. These guys have decided to go for a more metalcore/melodic hardcore approach when it comes to their guitar tabs. They are usually high pitched chords that are being played and they have an extremely uplifting feeling. This is the same feeling that you usually get for a melodic hardcore band and occasionally you might get snapshots of it in metalcore. They aren’t fast or overly complex, they really have played it quite simple throughout the EP. So if you expect super quick guitar solos or disorganised shredding of the guitars, you have come to the wrong place. To me, I welcome this calmness of their guitars because it fits in well with the rest of the music and I think that’s more important than showing how supermegaawesomely you can shred a guitar’s strings. So it’s a smart move on the guitarist’s part.

Let the Strong Prosper is a decently sized EP with 7 tracks and around about 25 minutes playing time. There are a couple of very respectable tracks on here and they are excellent for giving us an idea of what they could be planning for an album in the near future. The track Waves Of Overwhelming Dependency is an ok track and I think that it represents Burn The Weak’s sound very well. The music is moderately paced and there is a pretty good breakdown. Also, the song structure of this track is set out more like a metalcore track rather than a deathcore one. The track For We Are Many is probably the most complex track on the album in terms guitar work. Now here is where the guitar work shows their full potential, they are high pitched riffs that are very uplifting. This track has by far the best guitar work. The final track to mention is the opening song (not the intro) Praying For Savoir. This is probably where these guys show their true musician ship in their song writing. For an unbelievingly simple song, they have created one of the most atmospheres that you will hear in the album. It’s just that everything about this track fits in perfectly. Nothing feels out of place or missing.

Overall Let the Strong Prosper isn’t a bad start to a young music career. But because these guys are from Germany, they might struggle to get as much attention as what an American or UK metalcore/deathcore band might receive. I think the real highlights in this album were definitely the guitar work and song writing. Although there are a couple of memorable moments in this EP, there was nothing that really gave us the WOW factor, it did seem a little generic. So I’d have to say the replayability for fans of the “core” genre who are looking for something more than just generic metalcore or deathcore might not like it. But for those who like melodic metal/hardcore core this is worthwhile because it is most likely that you would enjoy it. Either way I believe that this EP is definitely worth a go. When it comes to recommending tracks, I recommend that you listen to the whole album or at least give the three tracks that I’ve mentioned above a go which are; Praying For Savoir, Waves Of Overwhelming Dependency and For We Are Many. Overall, this is an EP that is worthy of some attention and I’m almost certain that these guys have the potential to do more, 16/20.
