Could have been something really special

The whole progressive core movement has become stale as of late, with bands seemingly content to be doing the same thing as everyone else. As a result the scene has been on a downward slide, with very few bands pushing the genre forward. Are Violence From Within one of these bands or are they another nail in the coffin for this genre?

Violence From Within play a far more melodic version of deathcore than the usual bands, there's a large amount of progressive and djent infleunce thrown into their sound along with ample amounts of melodic death metal and even some shoegazing sections. Their sound is thankfully quite unique and different in progressive core sections with some pretty unique and fresh sounds going on here. The first track in particular is highly melodic and progressive, with a definite shoegaze vibe going on, it really adds a lot to the atmosphere and overall quality of the music. Thankfully the shoegazing elements don't stop at the first track and they're kept in ample amounts throughout the albums, adding something unique and fresh to a sound so often at risk of stagnating. The last track as well carries on with the shoegazing aesthetics, having quite a nice melody and being an excellent closer to the album.

The melodic death metal influence to this album is very strong, adding a lot to the musical quality and ensuring that it doesn't remain boring. This whole album is highly melodic and could almost pass off for a hyper melodic death metal release was in not for the abundance of the breakdown. The riffs are stellar and highly progressive, they show a good degree of technicality and have a fantastic sense of melody, it really helps to set them apart within the scene.

Despite the numerous good parts of Idiocracy there are some major glaring flaws that prevent this album from reaching its full potential. The breakdowns are the biggest problem as this album is full of them, there's too much palm muting for an album of this style and it gets boring, and fast. The palm muting detracts massively from the overall quality of the music as they're uninteresting and worn out, it creates a really languid atmosphere to this album that does nothing for their music. It's a real shame that the band decided to stick to standard deathcore tropes by the overuse of the infamous breakdowns. I find when breakdowns are done correctly they can work quite well in context with the music, The Contortionist and The Faceless are examples of bands who know how to pull off a good breakdown. Violence From Within are not, the breakdowns are tired and they lack energy, they prevent the songs from remaining interesting throughout and is the albums major weak point.

I really don't understand why Violence From Within chose to mix thuggish and moronic breakdowns in with music such as this, the music has such a high amount of potential that the use of breakdowns isn't necessary (not that it ever is mind you). It's almost as though the band were worried they wouldn't get enough attention so they decided to add numerous breakdowns to appease all the scene kids. Violence From Within have definitely got a lot of potential but if they want to succeed in the progressive scene then they must remove the breakdowns, they're not working for them at all.
