If you haven’t yet made contact with Indiana’s
Coffinworm you might guess, by the band’s name, how it might sound. If you thought on something dirty, crawling through dark, morbid places then you have guessed it right!
Coffinworm is a sludge/black metal band that thrives on corrosive riffage, distorted vocals and down/mid-tempo song structures.
Although the album’s opener “Sympathectomy” closely reminds Australia’s death metal monsters
Portal, “IV.I.VIII” quickly shows it’s true form with filthy and doomy tracks like the hypnotic “
Black Tears”, “Of Eating Disorders
And Restraining Orders” and “Instant
Death Syndrome” – the same one in the split with Fistula.
If you’re looking forward to ride in slow-motion on a black whirlpool, then it’s hard to be disappointed with “IV.I.VIII”. However with the already mentioned death metal vibe on “Sympathectomy”, the catchy riff that comes around on “
Lust vs.
Vengeance” and the speed up on “A
Death Sentence Called
Life” that intends on closing “IV.I.VIII” in a way similar to the opening; the record gets some interesting diversity, something that would be pretty nice of hearing in the songs that make other half of this release.
It could be better, but it’s good and far from being an expendable release.
