Coming from "the big boot" of Italy, Downhead's music hardly delivers with the impact of a swift kick in the ass. They play a mild, yet heavy style of Alternative Metal, with influences dating back to the 1980's, and the 1990's. At first glance "retro" might look like an ugly description for any artist, as though their work isn't very original. But modern music television is dominated with videos of the "rap crap" and the "hip hop slop". In comparison to that, any "retro" metal band sounds good.

Downhead formed in 2008, with a mix of experienced musicians, from an eclectic range of styles in the Milano music scene. Everything that I've read about them, indicates that they're a 3-piece band, without a bassist. But I hear plenty of bass in their music and even saw them on "live" You Tube videos performing as a 4-piece band, with a bassist. So they must be in the middle of a line up change.

Their musical scheme effortlessly shifts into about 3 different directions, which coincide with the moodiness of the lyrics. They play some light music with acoustic guitar strumming, sounding something like Candlebox. Marco is their vocalist and he doubles up as one of their guitarists. His vocal presentations sound like a cross between Maynard Keenan(Tool) and Kevin Martin(Candlebox). The guitars often combine for a majestic sound that is most comparable to The Cult. Then they will abruptly break into some choppy bass rhythms, Heavy, mid-paced, and resembling Tool. Then they will go back through the Candlebox routine. Their skilled guitar players sometimes flare-up with whining guitar solo's.

It's not a bad release, it does sound pretty good. But the the music sounds too repetitive. They have run the basic rhythms and melodies into the ground. They need to spend a few weekends alone in the mountains, with each member secluded, with a gun, and his favorite pipe. In conditions like those, people get so bored, that they need to create something. What this band needs most is to get some fresh new song ideas.
