Engraved Disillusion describe themselves as being a Melodic Death Metal band but having many more influences ranging from the genre’s figureheads to Black Sabbath or The Black Dalhia Murder.

It’s not the first time I read such a similar description: "We play Melodeath but this is far too reductive a genre to encompass the greatness of our influences". Gee, if you're going to play Melodic Death Metal, please be proud about it. It's like a confession in my eyes: “we know that Death Metal is not super sexy so we'd rather give a few more influences so you may be interested in our music...". Well, maybe I'm overreacting. Maybe not.

Because Engraved Disillusion is a Melodic Death Metal band and no I don't hear no Black Sabbath influences in their music or anything beyond At The Gates or Dark Tranquility. And what’s wrong with this?

Desolate is their first ever recording and is a three-track long EP which you can freely download from their last.fm page. The music is rather catchy and yes is reminiscent of the Goteborg scene even though the riffing displayed, for instance, on a Fallen Redemption, is very much Carcass-like Heartwork-era.

Songwriting is pretty straightforward and plain and efficient. No circumvallated structures, no prog-like approach, this is good Melodeath for fans of the genre. Nothing exceptional or outstanding but it does the job pretty nicely and that’s a rather good thing. Obviously it won’t be enough for Engraved Disillusion to stand out of the swarm of numerous bands playing in this area.

It will take them a few efforts to achieve their own identity to clearly be recognized as a solid pretender. It's obviously doable and their musicianship should help them going into the right direction. At present, it's a solid effort but nothing that they will be remembered for considering the genre is plagued by followers.

Give them a try and visit their last.fm page and see for yourself.
