Ever Dream is a young female fronted metal band hailing to you from Spain. Most of people, hearing “female fronted metal,” would think of melodic, etheric singing, or contrariwise of almost male-sounding growl. In any case, these bands are often called music for girls (or pussies). I don’t know whether it is good or not, but in my view Ever Dream kind of fits into this statement.


Sounding like a mix of Bullet for my Valentine and a Japanese teenage girl j-rock band, the band’s Demo 09, released thank to Mafia Records, takes the worst and the best from both. Not that metalcore boybands or screaming Japanese girls couldn’t do a good work, but this really isn’t anything I’d turn on if I wanted something heavy.


To start with smearing and prising – the beginning is very promising. Heavy, catchy and likeable intro – nothing to blame for. At least until the vocals take place. Mary’s singing isn’t bad, but as I said and have to repeat again, it would fit much better into an adolescent girl band. Try to find any j-rock girl band and listen to the vocals. As well as in Ever Dream case, the leader sings louder instead of where you would be waiting for higher. I’m not telling that some opera-like vocals would fit better, definitely not in this genre, but showing a little more singing, not screaming skills would do better.

While listening to the first third (yes, it means the first song called Mortal Games), I was filled with hope that occasional, or rather rare male vocals would appear more in the following two songs, but no. As though the band was too bashful to show that they can do really, really good.


Against all Enemies is much more striking and slightly washes a remaining smack of all bad impression that could the first song make. Mainly because everything is enforced. Not only the guitar solo is satisfactory evidence that the band has something to offer, and as well as this, in a slow passage the singer finally proves that she really CAN sing. Oh, and my admiration also pertains to the band for the gradation of the song.


The last one, Rising, really makes the band rise in my eyes. Even though it again sounds like a sitcom theme song a little. And why? Because it is a kind of a song which you don’t have to like to remember. Like the whole demo after all. Yes, it is a starting band and yes, it isn’t so heavy or brutal, but on the other hand, the Spaniards have something, probably the enthusiasm springing from every song, that makes me wish them a good luck, especially if they keep on improving my opinion with each next song, exactly like in case of this demo. I’m probably not a kind of a person that would buy their CD, but definitely the one that would recommend it someday.
