McGalligog are a brand new melodic death metal band from Ireland. They’ve just recently released their first EP, entitled ‘Delusions of Madness’, and it’s a very solid start to this band’s discography.

Luckily for the listener, you don’t get the kind of ‘melodic death metal’ that recent bands have been plugging that sounds more like metalcore than anything else. This band does focus more on the ‘melodic’ part of ‘melodic death metal’ rather than the ‘death metal’ part. Their melodic riffs and solos that make up the music link them more to early thrash and power metal bands in my opinion, not to mention some of the riffs off the first and last songs are bouncy and happy to boot… not that that’s a bad thing. There are plenty of small interludes in the songs, something that I expect not too many people are used to in the genre, but they really keep me interested throughout the EP, especially the one near the middle of ‘Warlords’. The solos are another standout aspect. They’re pretty interesting, sort of reminiscent of Arch Enemy and Mors Principium Est, and really plentiful on the release; I think there must be two solos on every song here.

The only thing that I think is holding the band back right now are the vocals. They just don’t sound different or unique, and I know I’ve heard very similar vocals before (maybe from Mors Principium Est or Cradle of Filth). They also seem to get tired out quickly, especially towards the end of ‘Another Fast One’. By the end, they get a little tiresome because they don’t change in pitch very much. Of course, this is only their first release, and most death or black metal vocalists don’t have standout vocals on their first try (look at Johan Liiva), but I expect the vocals to get better as time goes on. There are two instances that clean vocals are used, and they don’t really affect the music positively or negatively for me. They sound a little corny in ‘Earthbound Doom’, but are much easier to get into in ‘Lunacy’.

The EP ends on a really nice guitar melody, and in the end resonates with you pretty well. Good job on this EP guys. It’s a strong first release, full of well-done solos and soft melody interludes that vary the music’s tone and keeps the listener interested. The vocals are average, but it doesn’t detract from the overall sound too much. I will try to look for the band’s later releases online and see where they go from here.
