the music presented here is definitely nothing simple at all

Weed masters Cannabis Corpse returns this year with their darkest sounding and most technical effort yet with Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise. While I have consciously avoided the band all along, thinking that this band can't come up with anything serious, being more concerned about their weed than music, listening to this album has definitely surprised me, changing my impression of the band greatly.

Visions from the Dankside sets the right mood for the album, teleporting the listener into the scene of a dying person's room in a hospital. With Lunatic of Pot's Creation, the band introduces their razor sharp style of playing, with technical riffs and complex drumming to match, punctuated with pinch harmonics. Andy's vocals are deeper than ever (yet at times alternating to a shriek), reminding listeners of Cannibal Corpse's Corpsegrinder, backed by the urgent riffs of the instrumental section, it feels as if Cannabis Corpse were rushing towards a certain goal in mind and taking the listener along for the ride, whether he likes it or not.

The increased technicality in the music is evident not only from the riffs unleashed by guitarist Nick throughout the album, but also from the drumming of Josh, with the constantly shifting and odz music, and at times brings to mind Japan's Defiled, such as on the first few moments on Immortal Pipes. While I for one, don't find any technical style of death metal memorable at all, Cannabis Corpse does not overdo it with the short track runtimes ensuring that my mind does not wander too far off. However, it woumonics, as they tend to get slightly irritating, such as on Dead by Bong.

The increased display of the abilities of the individual instruments on Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise makes it hard to believe that the band was really high while writing the music, as the music presented here is definitely nothing simple at all and can't be easily executed. However, with such quality death metal available, who's complaining?ld have been better if the guitarists had gone easier on the pinch har
