Excessively Boundless

Stargazer is one of those bands that not often can one come across with it. Theirs is some sort of unique blend of primitive death metal, black metal vocals and ambiance and a variety of progressive elements, managing to keep the core of their sound raw and mystical.
A Merging to the Boundless”, the third full length from these Australians, starts in a very satisfying way with the punch that is “Black Gammon”, followed by the hypnotic atmosphere of “Old Tea” with its eerie melodies, and getting even better with the whirlwind called“An Earth Rides Its Endless Carrousel”. But not all is good. Check the track “The Grand Equalizer” for instance: it stands apart from the rest of the bunch by having more than 10 minutes length and it drags a lot to reach the end despite the well-crafted contemplative atmosphere, however the unavoidable boredom is broken by sequences of pure awesomeness and this track really tells a lot about “A Merging to the Boundless” in comparison to both of its predecessors: “A Great Work of Ages” and “The Scream That Tore the Sky” – while being an enjoyable listen from beginning to end, “Boundless” can’t bond to the previous masterworks because it hardly gets as powerful or innovative, just try to listen to “Ride The Everglade Of Reogniroro” and place it next to “One Will Always Feast” and the later will be far superior in the same way that “The Grand Equalizer” can’t be matched to “Chase For The Serpentsong” and if we take on the disc’s closer “Incense And Aeolian Chaos” then that’s just an uninspired moment that could be much better.
Anyway, though far from the quality of the band’s previous works, “Merging To The Boundless” is a good piece of music, one fine death/black metal release that will catch the eye (but mostly the ear) of those who enjoy their music without boundaries of style.
