Varpunen pienoinen, syönyt kesäeinehen,

Tule, varpu, riemulla, ota siemen multa!
Joulu on, koditon varpuseni onneton,

Tytön luo nyt riemuiten lensi varpukulta:
Kiitollisna siemenen otan kyllä sulta.
Palkita jumala tahtoo kerran sinua.

En mä ole, lapseni, varpu tästä maasta,
Olen pieni veljesi, tulin taivahasta.
