1. DREAMS OF A FOOL

Tell me, can you see her ?
Walking like a queen down Drury Lane
Oh here she comes again
Walking up the corner of 10th street and Main

Don't you know I'm walking in your shadow
When all I really want to do is get close to you
Oh don't tell me that you don't know
I'm the only one who loves you so
So what do you want the others for ?

All these dreams of love
Have made a fool of me
And I keep dreaming on and on and on…

And she just fades away
Like a song inside my memory

Soon I won't know the words
Like the music, going, gone

2. BREAKDOWN LANE

There's a brand new club downtown
It's called the Breakdown Lane
All the vipers come around
For a quick one at the lane

Thumbtack stars on a cellophane sky
Clouds are done, won't you hang them up to dry
Picture perfect upside down
This way up and that way downtown

Breakdown Lane Breakdown Lane
Come and feed your head down at the Breakdown lane

Breakdown Lane Breakdown Lane
Everybody's coming down the Breakdown Lane

Breakdown Lane Breakdown Lane
Going to have a party at the Breakdown Lane

Breakdown Lane Breakdown Lane
Come on downtown to the Breakdown Lane

The mayor wants to close it
The church just wants to burn it
If we go down in flames
We'll all be down at the Breakdown Lane

3. RADIO SONG

Hey now late last night, heard a song on the radio
I can't remember who was playing
I don't even know what the lyrics were saying
All I know's it hit me hard like a diesel train rocking and rolling
Now all the music sounds the same if I don't get to hear that song again

Please, please play my song, I don't know its name
I don't know who's singing
Starts with the guitar and the bass and drums
Jack-a-rambam holy wang dang doodle
It's rock'n'roll like a jackboot stroll, like a thunder clap going to rock my soul
I ain't saying it's my saving grace, but if it feels good I'm going to take what's coming

Here comes the bridge
Here comes that river
Here comes the sun
Here come the rain and showers
Sing while you can, what you feel
'Til you catch somebody singing
There goes the bridge, now it's gone
It's all over now

4. SOUL MACHINE

I've seen people in my time
With dreams inside of their heads
Full of singing tomorrows
Dancing crippled before they could walk

The dreams all faded
Like pictures taken of noone
They gave up the ghost
Without making a sound

The teachers and the parents
Give it some of their best
And our own little tragedies
Take care of the rest

Black paint your windows
And seal up the cracks
So deep in the machine
You can never go back

Surrender forever
To the cogs and the wheels
As they tear you apart
Noone knows how you feel

The soul-machine will strip you down
Chew you up and file you down
Spew you up and Squeeze you out
'Til you're strangled and mangled and all burnt out

5. LIES

Every time I turn the T.V. on
I hear the same old lies
The bad guy on a monday
Is the good guy on a tuesday

It's all lies
Lies, lies, lies

The record company says to me
We mailed your check last wednesday
But I pass that mail box every day
And I don't see no money

The bossman owes me money
Says it's hard to make ends meet
But I see him with his bank roll
Strutting like he owns the street

You tell me that you love me
That I'm the only one for you
What do you tell your husband ?
Do you tell him that stuff too ?

Baby I'll quit smoking
And I'll stop my drinking too
And if you buy that one from me
Then I guess I've learned from you

6. HARD TIMES

I lost my job last monday, don't you know, when they closed down the mill
I couldn't pay my rent, Lord knows I couldn't pay my bills
So I got me a Michigan twenty gauge and a box full of shells
Held up the Western Union and I shot it all to hell

Ah ah, going to keep on running
Ah ah, got to make it through the day
Ah ah, going to keep on running
Ah ah, got to make it through the day

I crossed the Oregon state line in a stolen pick-up truck
I cut off all of my hair and kept a lock just for luck
I could be up in Vancouver by this time tomorrow
Just looking for a good good time and spending all my dough

Road block up ahead,
Looks like my luck's finally running out
Line after line of men in blue with rifles hanging out
Flashing lights and shotgun blasts, they're punching out my lights
I'll see you in Vancouver, but maybe not tomorrow night

7. DARLENE

Just start singing your song
Baby, do your cough
Here comes the bus, here come the tourists
Baby you can pull it off

Just a couple of nickels
We're going to need sa few more dimes
If we're going to get a bottle
Around about dinner time

Baby don't just lie there sleeping
Won't you talk to me
Baby you can't just lie here on the street
Aw, come on

Broke down angel in high heels
Won't you open your eyes, don't you know how I feel
About you

Pull yourself together, girl I know you can do it
I can't make it alone, come on I'll take you home with me.

8. LONG GONE (SONG FOR LENNY BRUCE)

They gathered downtown, dressed in their sunday's best
To thank the masked-man as he headed out west
He'd saved their lives, he'd saved their houses in town
But when they tried to thank him, he was already gone

He was long gone, he was long gone, yeah
Flying down the road
He was long gone, he was long gone, yeah
Flying down the road

The judge was waiting, he was worried 'bout the time
The flowers were all wilting in the little girl's hands
" Does he think he's too good for us ? " I heard the butcher say
So they changed their talk and cursed his name and headed home again

9. LIKE A SONG

Staring out at the ocean
I'm still dreaming of you
And the country where you come from
Is that where you're gone ?

Gone like a song
Like a change in the seasons
Gone like a song

You said you'd go
And now you're gone
And here I am I'm all alone, I'm crying
Can't find the road
Up to your house
Can't find the house
Or the key to your door

Got to get up every day and do the same thing
I'd jump into the river but it looks like rain
Don't you know you're like the ocean
Full of change, always the same
And I love you like the ocean I'm overwhelmed

10. THE HIGHT COUNTRY

I met her in a small cafe
She said she worked there so she could get back home
She never said where she was from
She smiled and said that she'd been gone too long
She said she'd stay a while with me
And then one day I'd have to set her free
Where are you going baby, baby ?
She said I'm going to the high country

So I left my home and headed out to find her
And everything I do reminds me of her
Listen to me now, I'm looking for the high country
'Cause when I do I know I'll find my baby

There's no map to find out where she's gone
There's noone I can call up on the phone
The High Country is just a dream
But I can feel it deep within my own
I know I've seen the place before
I've seen it from atop of your wings
A gypsy woman in Bombay
Told me we would meet again someday

Looking for a home, I know I'm going to find her
With the wind in my back, I know we'll be together
Listen to me now, I'm looking for the high country
'Cause when I do I know I'll find my baby

I can't find you, I can't go back
Your memory's a shackle on my back
I traveled high I traveled low
And now I'm old I got no place to go
My dreams are dead, my tears are dry
But I don't want to wait around and die
I see her now, she's coming to me
I found her deep inside the high country

Found my home, God knows I'll never leave her
Found my dream and now we'll be together
Listen to me now, I'm living in the high country
With my baby by my side, she'll never leave me

11. OUT OF NOWHERE

I came straight out of nowhere
That's where I'm going back now
I'm just a rambling man
With no place to call home

Don't sell me your countries
With you powers and wars
Your unions and armies
And all your causes to die for

All I want to do is rove and ramble
With my loved ones and my friends
Give me time to sing just one more song
Before we reach the end
