Genius Ultor is the Black Metal pendant of Stillborn

Released about a month after Los Asesinos Del Sur, Stillborn's latest record, Genius Ultor's Dzie? Nocy, is basically the Black Metal pendant of Stillborn. I’m not sure how much this may be considered a side-project but I feel as it is mainly the same musicians wanting to express something in a different way and, so as not to confuse anyone, releasing this “second” expression under a different moniker.

Both albums from Stillborn and Genius Ultor share the mastering at the Kwart Sutdio and it shows. Again, not caring much for what has become the trademark of the mighty Hertz Studio: digitally brutal, the music is veiled by an organic production which suits the primitive brutality one can find on Dzie? Nocy.

Obviously, one will find many similarities between Genius Ultor and Stillborn. On the other hand, where Los Asesinos Del Sur was a Death Metal fest laced with very few Black Metal elements, Dzie? Nocy goes the opposite way offering a slab of very brutal and punkish Black Metal with very few incursions into Death Metal (mainly some riffing in Po?egnanie Ojczyzny and Zdrada). As rightly pointed out by other reviewers, the listener will be reminded of the early sounds of Finnish legends Impaled Nazarene. Sheer energy and an urgency to spit it out. In this respect, the band may also be compared to Polish Blasphemy Rites and to a certain extent to Revelation Of Doom.

Breathers are incorporated cleverly balancing the onslaught by interludes which give an overall "fin de siècle" atmosphere where elegance and good manners are about to be destroyed. This adds a feeling of impending doom and make the tracks really stand out rather than being just fillers as one would fear. Still with 10 minutes of interludes and just 20 minutes of music, this will leave you wanting for more as tracks are rather short except for the track Zdrada peaking above four minutes. But hey, as written above, this is punkish Black Metal and having twelve minutes songs would somehow beat the purpose.

I'm a bit suprised that the Pagan Records distribution didn't help widen the spectrum of Genius Ultor's listeners and that the band is so under-estimated if not just ignored. This is really a quality album and even though maybe not really on par with Los Asesinos Del Sur, it ought to draw a bit more attention.
