Shaman was formed in 2000, when Ricardo Confessori left Angra and started a new band: Shaman.
Shaman means "the one that can see in the dark", and it is represented, in general, by the priests that can heal using elements of the nature.
Mixing heavy metal, classical music and world music, the band recorded its debut album, Ritual,in the beginning of 2002. The album was recorded in Germany, except for some parts recorded in Brazil, and was produced by the famous Sascha Paeth(Heaven´s Gate, Rapsody).
Ritual had good reviews by the Brazilian press and all around the world, being released in more than 15 countries. The World Ritual Tour lasted for over a year and a half, crossing Brazil and many other countries in Latin America, Europe and Asia. More than 150 shows were played, an excellent mark for a debut album tour.
In 2003, Shaman had a good position in the specialized media charts, and a great surprise came when Ritual was elected the best (not only heavy metal) album of 2002 by Folha de Sao Paulo (a very well-known and respected Brazilian daily newspaper) readers. The same accomplishment was repeated in 2004. Still in 2004, the band was the opening act for Iron Maiden at the Pacaembu stadium in São Paulo, for an audience of approximately 45.000 people.
To celebrate the huge success, the band decided to register a special live show on DVD. The concert was sold out in Credicard Hall, São Paulo, with fans and friends, filling the stage with special guests like Tobias Sammet, Sascha Paeth, Marcus Viana and George Mouzayek, Andi Deris and Michael Weikath. The release of Ritualive, in CD and DVD, got great reviews and sales too. According to Universal Music of Brasil , Ritualive is the best DVD of the genre released in Brazil, due to the content and the quality.
In 2005, with the second studio album practically finished and ready to be released, the name of the band was changed. The band decided to add an ‘A' to it, so the new name became Shaaman.
On the following months, Reason, the second studio release, reached the stores. The album was recorded in Brazil , produced by the very same Sacha Paeth, who stated that “Reason was the rescue of all heaviness, feeling and heavy-metal spirit of the 80s” and that “while Ritual favored the undeniable and exceptional skills of the musicians, Reason opened up space for their hearts and souls”. The music was more organic, and helped to highlight the contrast between heavy guitars, classic keyboards and world music elements.
After the Reason Tour, that lasted one year, some misunderstandings caused the departure of 3 members, and their abandon of the band opened up space to Thiago Bianchi, Léo Mancini and Fernando Quesada.
Now, in 2007, these new members, together with Ricardo Confessori, are on the final stages of recording and mixing the new album, that shall hit the stores by the end of June.

Ricardo Confessori cleaned up the house in 2006, remaining the only active member of Shaman due to "musical differences" with former band mates André Matos, Hugo & Luis Mariutti and Fabio Ribeiro. After posting two studio releases since their previous split from Angra, could the Brazilian scene handle another split? Well, 2007 brought us the answer with a new lineup and a new fantastic album, Immortal.

With Léo Mancini filling in on guitars, Fernando Quesada on bass and Thiago Bianchi on vocals, the band struck gold to recreate the golden years of Brazilian Metal. Obviously oriented more progressive than ever due to Ricardo's drumming, this Immortal brings furious heavy tunes and power ballads back to life.

Sure, the vocal style is very similar to André Matos but why complain? After all, that is what we would expect as Angra did the exact same thing when André left the band and replaced him by Edu Falaschi. The accentuated progressive edge of the songs renders this album the best thing coming out of the diverse projects created from the ashes of the original Angra lineup since 1996's Holy Land. With enraged guitar work and epic compositions, this new Shaman has seduced my musical senses like never before. Songs like 'Strength' and 'Freedom' embody the essence of the new Shaman, fast, catchy and technical.

It remains Power Metal by all aspect as it is clear on the opener 'Inside Chains', and a handful of songs might be perceived as too cheesy. However, I strongly believe that this album is the start of something bigger. The band is younger and the new musicians all have something new to offer.

If you liked the previous Shaman albums, I strongly encourage you to check out André Matos solo project instead. On the other hand, if the thought of hearing great prog power appeals to you Immortal is definitely for you. You are standing in front of one of 2007's best progressive metal albums, and surely one of the surprises of the year. Now, we know what musical differences arose between Confessori and his former band mates.

I listened to the demo versions like 6 months ago, I remember that I liked them but I don't know what I would think today. But Shaman remain one of the best power metal bands there is, so I guess I should hear it.

This album is very good, it deserves the credit that has receveid. Ricardo Confessori has the whole merit, for not giving up of this excellent band. I honestly think that this member change that happened in the band was for the better for all the parts involved, no doubt about it. All the songs are extremely catchy, lots of tecnique and strong riffs, beautifull environments, and amazing vocals. Songs like Immortal, In the Dark, Tribal by Blood or Strenght are hard to forget. Indeed this band has a lot to give, lots of talent and magic.

Absolutely agree! I would give it a 9. I think this is an excellent album and like you said, this is the beginning for something bigger. For me, it's their best one. Matos it's an excellent musician but his voice it's too melodic and sweet for me. I prefer something with more power like this new Shaman.

I´ve Heard both André Matos new album "Time to Be Free" and this one of Shaman "Immortal". I have to say that this album appeals way more to me that the album of André Matos. This album by Shaman is excellent in every term and for me has more quality than André Matos new band, debut album.

[Rating12065870] Excellent combination of power metal, progressive power metal, symphonic heavy metal and thrash metal with kick-ass vocalist Thiago Bianchi and majestic drummer Ricardo Confessori (ex-Angra). If you consider yourself a headbanger, I severely urge you to listen to Immortal at the very first possible opportunity. Immortal is one of the few albums, that it is impossible to disappoint. If you like metal, that is.

Considering Andre Matos vacated his vocal throne in Angra to form Shaman, it seems nothing short of ironic that here, five years since their storming debut, we have a second album from the melodic Power Metal outfit, their first without the driving force behind their inception. You know what else is ironic? It's actually better than their debut. As a devoted follower of both Angra and Matos, it's hard for me to admit that new vocalist Thiago Bianchi does a better job here than Matos ever could, and if Edu Falaschi ever parted ways with the aforementioned rulers of Brazilian prog/Power Metal, this guy could certainly step up to the challenge.
What Shaman have done with their money on "Immortal", is take the band's history into consideration, and ignored all exceptions, creating an album full of blazing Power Metal anthems that span influence from the likes of Vision Divine, Symphony X and of course, Angra. Bianchi manages to glide his incredible vocal ability through fields of ethnic flavour, battling guitar duels, and storming double bass with ease, making every single track on "Immortal" stand out compared to the ream of disappointing follow ups by top name bands this year. Opening with the two most uneventful tracks is an obscure move, but it only improves the quality of the album's second half, making the heavenly "One Life", the sprawling "Freedom", and the celeritous "Strength" some of the best tracks Angra never wrote. Ex-Angra stickman Ricardo Confessori is so hot on his kit you'd think his feet were on fire, and as I mentioned, the vocals are some of the most sublime I've ever heard. A triumph for both Shaman and Scarlet, if you're looking for your next Power Metal fix and you're in doubt over what to pick this coming Christmas, you're search is over. Angra, Matos: sleep with one eye open.

Most readers know the beginning of Brazilian power metal band, Shaman: it was formed by Andre Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori after leaving the legendary Angra. Their first release 'Ritual' displayed the oft necessary pains of a new genesis. The second studio release (third work), 'Reason,' showed the promise of coherence and maturity. It was a pretty good effort. After a successful tour supporting 'Reason,' problems arose and everybody but Confessori bailed on this fledgling band. Shaman was now on life support, but Confessori vowed to continue on.
Welcome another new birth as Shaman has filled the empty slots with Fernando Quesada on bass, Leo Mancini on guitar, and Thiago Bianchi on vocals, all of whom create no blip on the metal radar. But flying under the radar is not necessarily a bad thing, nor does it mean a lack of talent. For instance, Mr. Mancini taught for five years at the Conservatório Musical Souza Lima and played for Jeff Scott Soto when toured Brazil; and Mr. Bianchi formed to bands on his own and has done some producing including a work for Angra. Shaman is the sum of its parts and after listening to 'Immortal,' the whole is even better. 'Immortal' is a very good album.
First, let me say that the production is brilliant on 'Immortal.' As for the style, this is basic power metal with a good dash of progressive metal thrown into the mix. After the very good instrumental intro, 'Renovatti,' we are treated to solid power metal in 'Inside Chains.' When you hit third cut 'Tribal Blood' you hear the power of Mr. Bianchi's vocals and the thrilling riffs of Mr. Mancini's guitar. Confessori opens up the title track with some unique and creative drum work. The song itself is diverse in arrangement proving to be immensely satisfying.
When I reached the midpoint of the album, I found the second best cut on this work, 'One Life.' Here we discover the versatility of Biachi's vocals: he's not just another metal screamer. Confessori is so strong and consistent and with Mr. Quesada on bass, the rhythm section is mesmerizing. And Mancini shows exceptional creative brilliance. The best song on the album is, by far, 'In The Dark,' a true power metal balled (I'm a sucker for this stuff). The arrangement is sweeping in granduer and power. Bianchi is wonderful, strong and soothing in the same moment. I do not miss Mr. Matos. Mancini inspires with his precise acoustic and electric delivery.
As we approach the end, we are subjected to some average power metal with only small glimpses of originality. In a way, we have returned to the growing pains of a band learning to live with itself. However, there some worthy notes to make. Quesada's bass work is fantastic on 'Never Yield.' 'Immortal' ends on a more subdued note with simple vocals and much acoustic guiar on the long 'The Yellow Brick Road.'
Overall, I'm rather impressed with Shaman 2.0. 'Immortal' is a solid effort from a band just beginning to know each other. I expect good things (again) in the future. Recommended!

As many of you may know, Brazilian Sao Paolo based ProgMetal act Angra suffered a temporary blow when a major split in their ranks saw singer André Matos , bassist Luis Mariutti and drummer Ricordo Confessori leave in 2000. Angra recovered, the decamping party would start work on Shaman . But not before Matos travelled to Germany to work on his solo project Virgo . And while he was over in Europe, he took some time to front ProgMetal unit Looking Glass Self (started by former Sieges Even trio of guitrist Marcus Steffan , bassist Oliver Holzwarth and drummer Alex Holzwarth ) and contribute to their 2000 demo Equinox , before returning to Brazil to concentrate on the Melodic Power Metal geared Shaman !
Which would not mean the end of "solo" endeavours by the band's members. Shaman 's keyboarder Fabio Ribeiro for instance issued his second solo album The Tide Turns under the Bleziq Zatsaz moniker in May 2002. Among the guests on this album would feature Shaaman guitarist Hugo Mariutti and Angra guitarist Kiko Loureiro . Matos participated in Progressive Rock outfit Abydos (instigated by producer Stefan Glas , it also included singer Andy Kuntz and drummer Andreas Lill of Vandenplas , and Elegy singer Ian Parry ), and put in a guest appearance on Brazilian Sagga 's album Planetude .
Shaman 's debut Ritual came in late July 2002, released on Italian label Lucretia for Europe, Universal for South America, and JVC Victor for Japan. A month later the band would start Brazilian tour dates, and in March 2003 guitarist Luis Marietti would also join the ranks of Henceforth . The band signed to AFM in early 2004, and part of the deal included a re-issue of the debut album in March, the new version adding bonus DVD material. Meanwhile, NTS released the CD/DVD package Ritualive in May of the same year (in Japan, it was released on JVC Victor during September).
Shaman would start recordings for their sophomore album Reason (out in May) in early 2005, announcing a subtle name change to Shaaman in February. By October 2006, it seemed that things for Shaaman had come to an end when an official announcement of fan club members stated that the band had folded due to "personal and musical differences" (whére have we heard thàt before?). But Ricardo Confessori is not only a more than excellent drummer, he's also a very persistent little bugger and, taking back the moniker of Shaman , he reformed the band in lte 2006 with Karma singer Thiago Bianchi , Sunsarah guitarist Léo Mancini , and bassist Fernando Quesada .
And, you know something? Bianchi has thé voice to make forget that Shaman was ever fronted by the excellent Matos ! Truely! To say that the band's come full circle is no small thing, and we'll still have to wait to see if this line-up holds, but musically everything sounds wonderfully tight. The album kicks off with the nearly instrumental (only some – faked with keyboards, I'm sure – choral singing) shortie "Renovatti" , and the title says it all! I haven't had time to find a website for you to listen to some samples of the new album, due to a too busy reviewing schedule (and limited access to Internet), but I'm sure you'll find sómething after some surfing on the Net (try shamanImmortal.com for starters). What with the rather high-pitched and somewhat heady lead singing, and the almost continuous high pace, comparisons to top German bands in the Melodic Power Metal genre are quickly made, but you'll have to admit the band has an aftertaste of its own. The band has recently recorded a video for semi-ballad "In The Dark" (a true ballad coming with album closer "The Yellow Brick Road" , followed on the album by an unannounced instrumental which partly resounds with the sounds of a forest) and they will soon embark on a worldwide tour to promote the album.
Great stuff, even if in the guitar department at least, there's a couple of over-dubs, making one wonder hów the band is gonna make the same sound on stage without either relying on a hired hand, or programming.

Après Angra, Shaman, Shaaman : revoici Shaman !
Si vous avez manqué le début du feuilleton, une piqûre de rappel : la scission d'Angra a donné naissance au Shaman 1ere formule avec Matos, Mariutti et Confessori mais 2 albums plus tard, la sérénité n'est toujours pas au rendez-vous et le batteur se retrouve seul fin octobre 2006 et s'en est allé recruter des compatriotes pour "continuer l'aventure"...
Bonne pioche ?
Après une entrée en matière samplée ("renovatti"), on est en terrain connu avec "inside chains" et on regrette que Matos n'y pousse pas sa chansonnette tant le refrain semblait fait pour lui... Avec "tribal by blood", changement de style : fini les préliminaires ! Shaman 2 affirme sa personnalité : le chant se distingue et la guitare enchaîne avec bonheur...La voix de Thiago Bianchi se fait ensuite plus profonde dans "Immortal" : il montre alors l'étendue de son talent, va-t-on finir par oublier le fantôme d'André Matos qui planait jusqu'alors ? Côté guitare, Leo Mancini fait une démonstration particulièrement dans "strength" : un passage speed qui décoiffe, et le solo suscite l'admiration... "freedom" permet au bassiste de trouver lui aussi sa juste place mais le combo parait s'essouffler un peu, on sent poindre le déficit d'inspiration alors rien de tel qu'un retour aux sources pour mettre tout le monde d'accord : "never yield !" sur le modèle Angra avec coeurs, rythmique effrénée puis retour au calme bien géré dans la nuance au chant : assurément, Confessori a déniché là des musiciens qui tiennent la route et qui ne demandent qu'à s'affirmer... Dommage que l'album se termine sur un "the yellow brick road" pas très original, à moins que l'ambiance qui y règne (balade acoustique, chant maîtrisé, bruitages...) soit un clin d'oeil à "hollyland" : l'album qui a révélé Angra !
Bref, on y croit d'entrée : on en a l'eau à la bouche mais sans arriver à étancher notre soif
Thiago a l'étoffe d'un grand chanteur, Leo fait preuve d'une hallucinante habileté technique et Ricardo n'a rien perdu de sa pêche...
Y'a de l'espoir ! Laissons-leur le temps de se défaire de leur lourd héritage et de nous convaincre tout à fait avec leur prochain album !

Shaman est un cas à part. Formé par des ex membre de Angra dont le frontman Dédé Matos, le groupe nous a offert un chef d'oeuvre nommé Ritual en 2002 puis un second opus moins percutant où l'on sentait déjà la fin... Après seulement 2 albums et un (excellent) live, le split est bel est bien là, Ricardo Confessori (batteur) restant seul à bord du navire (ici c'est plutôt le radeau de la méduse). Il décide de continuer l'aventure et voilà qu'aujourd'hui débarque "Immortal", titre évocateur lancé au nez de Matos qui se sent enfin libre avec son nouvel album solo. Comme la vie est bien faite, les deux albums sortent en même temps...
Au vu de la pochette, on sent que le groupe est revenu aux sources, à savoir un power metal teinté de musique sud américaine. Autant le dire de suite, la flamme ne jaillit plus !!
Jamais de la vie je n'aurais dit avoir à faire à un album de Shaman ici ! Le groupe nous sert un metal bien ficelé certes mais tellement fade ! Les titres s'enchaînent inéluctablement sans qu'il en ressorte quelque chose, c'est triste.
De plus le groupe a nettement proguisé (une invention de ma part) ses compositions en rajoutant des solos de guitare et claviers à la Dream Theater ("Inside Chains").
Tout n'est pas insipide, la chanson titre et "One Life" me rappellent à mes bons souvenirs, avec leurs accents exotiques forts sympathiques. La power ballade de rigueur "In The Dark" est réussie, sans être non plus un chef d'oeuvre !
C'est très rare que je n'arrive pas à accrocher à un album à ce point là, un grand ouf de soulagement s'est emparé de moi lorsque le disque s'est arrêté, et même avec des écoutes supplémentaires je reste sur le même avis : le groupe joue bien, mais ça sent la seconde zone. Je préfère m'attarder sur l'album solo de Matos qui, lui, est inspiré et réécouter un bon Angra et un bon Ritual des familles !
Shaman reste et restera certainement le groupe d'un seul album, mais fort heureusement un album de génie.

"Durchschnittskost aus Südamerika"

Auch in Brasilien ist Power Metal beheimatet, wie SHAMAN [vor einiger Zeit wegen Namensstreitigkeiten noch SHAAMAN] beweisen. Die Band wurde im Jahr 2000 von den ehemaligen ANGRA-Mitgliedern Andre Matos [Gesang, Keyboard], Ricardo Confessori [Schlagzeug] und Luis Mariutti [Bass] gegründet. Das Line-Up vervollständigte Luis´ Bruder Hugo an der Gitarre. In dieser Besetzung wurde 2002 das Debut „Ritual“ eingespielt.
Anno 2007 ist von der ursprünglichen Besetzung nur noch Ricardo Confessori übrig geblieben. Mit seinen neuen Mitstreitern wirft er nun das Album „Immortal“ auf den Markt.

Mit „Renovatti“ eröffnet ein relativ langes Intro die Scheibe, das in der Dramaturgie wie die Filmmusik eines orientalischen Streifens daherkommt. „Inside Chains“, „Tribal By Blood“ und der Titeltrack sind dann Power Metal-Tracks von der Stange, die keinerlei Neuheiten mit sich bringen, sodass man nicht näher darauf eingehen muss.
„One Life“ ist das erste Stück, das aus diesem Rahmen fällt. Es beginnt instrumental im Stil südamerikanischer Folklore, dann übernimmt sehr ruhiger Gesang die Stimmung, bevor kräftige Riffs den Groove zu einer Mid-Tempo-Halbballade vorantreiben. Die Melodie krallt sich im Ohr fest und der Refrain ist eingängig. Ein Zwischenspiel mit Lead- und Retro-Orgel-Solo runden die Nummer ab.
„In The Dark“ ist eine gelungene Ballade mit fast durchgehender Akustik-Untermalung. Es fällt auf, dass Thiago Bianchis Stimme im ruhigen, gemäßigten Bereich einen rauhen, bluesigen Unterton hat, während er in den höheren Stimmlagen ein bisschen an Tobias Sammet erinnert. „Strength“ ist wieder ein Power Metal-Stück, das zu Anfang zwar einige gute Riffs bietet, danach aber wieder abflacht.
Ein richtiges Highlight ist „Freedom“. Hier stimmt einfach alles: die Power, die Melodie, Gesang, Refrain, Soli und ein phänomenales Instrumental-Outro. Auch „Never Yield“ kommt ganz positiv rüber. Der Song wird von einigen Tempowechseln beherrscht, Phasen melodischer Power wechseln sich mit ruhigeren Abschnitten ab. Klingt aber alles recht stimmig.
Zuguterletzt folgt noch das über 8-minütige „The Yellow Brick Road“. Knapp 4 Minuten lang ist es eine recht gelungene akustische Ballade, in der Bianchi nochmal sein gesangliches Können beweisen kann. Danach wird der Hörer mit Geräuschen des Dschungels konfrontiert, die teilweise von romantisch klingenden Banjo- und Flötentönen begleitet werden. Was SHAMANS Hintergründe zu diesem Arrangement sind, kann ich nicht genau ergründen, da – wie bei Promos leider üblich – keine Texte beiliegen. Follow the yellow brick road ist eigentlich eine Redewendung, die frei übersetzt soviel bedeutet wie Den Weg zu einem höheren Ziel verfolgen. Möglicherweise ist es dieses verfolgte höhere Ziel der Band, mit dem Song auf die Problematik durch die Abholzung des brasilianischen Regenwald aufmerksam zu machen. Das ist aber nur eine Spekulation von mir. Irgendwelche Informationen kann man auch der bandeigenen Homepage nicht entnehmen. Vielleicht werden uns SHAMAN irgendwann in dieses Geheimnis noch einweihen. Rein musikalisch gesehen, kann ich mit dem Song nichts anfangen und finde ihn recht überflüssig.

Im Fazit muss ich leider sagen, dass SHAMAN auf „Immortal“ wenig Klasse bringen. Hervorzuheben sind der Mid-Tempo-Stampfer „One Life“ und die Power Metal-Hymne „Freedom“. Der Rest ist viel Durchschnittsware und Beiwerk. Zu mehr als 4,5 Zählern kann es daher nicht reichen.
Positiv anzumerken ist noch der Sängerwechsel. Bianchi hat sicherlich eine größere Stimmbreite als Matos und kann mehr Abwechslung in die Songs einbringen, wenn diese es denn zulassen.
Klar negativ muss vermerkt werden, dass Band und Label so gut wie keine brauchbaren Informationen veröffentlichen. Beispielsweise bleibt unklar, wer den nicht unerheblichen Beitrag am Keyboard geleistet hat.

Do you remember Shaman's debut album, “Ritual” (NTS, 2002)? Featuring three former members of Angra (André Matos, Luis Mariutti and Ricardo Confessori), it was a varied progmetal album of a very high quality. Lots of gigs followed and their passage at Credicard Hall in São Paulo (Brazil) in April 2003 was recorded and filmed for a further CD/DVD release. When “Ritualive” was released by NTS in 2004, it was well-received by the press and the fans alike.
In 2005 the band had to change its name (for copyright Reasons) and Shaman became Shaaman. Album # 2, “Reason” (AFM Records, 2005), saw the band moving into a heavier direction and this time the style leaned more towards melodic metal than towards progmetal. After the “Reason” tour which lasted for about a year, problems started to cause a split and three members left the band. Out went André Matos, Hugo and Luis Mariutti and in came Thiago Bianchi (v), Leo Mancini (g) and Fernando Quesada (b).
When I first heard about this serious line-up change, I was very disappointed, but now that I've had the chance to listen to the the band's brand-new studio album, “Immortal” (Scarlet Records), I'm glad to report that it's a pretty good release in its own right. Replacing someone like André Matos is no sinecure, but Thiago Bianchi reveals himself as a very good vocalist. And the other new band members are certainly no clumsy oaves as well. Five years ago the band started as a progmetal band, but in the year 2007 they may easily be regarded as Brazil's best melodic/power metal band. Among the best tracks on offer are “Immortal” (featuring an intriguing interlude and brilliant axework of Mancini), “In The Dark” (first single), “Freedom” and “The Yellow Brick Road”. Thanks to a good balance between heavier and softer material, this “Immortal” is surely another well-produced Shaman album. Agreed, it's not as good as its two predecessors, but on the other hand there's absolutely no Reason to write them off. Check it out for yourself!

GOOD CD but in this music Style :EPIC/PROG/ORCHESTRAL POWER METAL there is a lot of competitors in BRAZIL ! They don't catch the same MAGIC as they use to have in the first two CD,even if the new singer THIAGO BIANCHIexKARMA is good sometimes the band seems to lose is focus !good but not exceptional !

O Heavy Metal nacional anda passando por momentos realmente estranhos não é mesmo? Afinal, Igor Cavalera deixou o Sepultura, Angra entrou em coma (e ninguém sabe até agora se a banda vai sair disso) e o Shaman se separou. E talvez essa tenha sido a coisa mais estranha de todas! Afinal para todos aqueles que acompanham a novela envolvendo o grupo Angra e seus ex-integrantes a impressão que se tinha era de que o Shaman era formando por pessoas unidas pela amizade mais do que qualquer outra coisa.

Mas o fato é que no final de 2006 começou a rolar os mais variados boatos sobre um possível fim da banda, ou que a banda iria continuar com um novo baterista. É então que todos são pegos de surpresa e o que parecia impossível aconteceu: em um comunicado ao fã clube, o baterista Ricardo Confessori revela que a banda continuaria sim, mas tendo da formação original apenas ele! Enquanto que o vocalista André Matos acabou por buscar o caminho da carreira solo (sendo acompanho pelos irmão Mariutti e pelo tecladista Fabio Ribeiro). Desde então os antigos fãs da banda têm se dividindo entre os que apóiam a nova formação da banda e aqueles que preferem André Matos e sua trupe.

A confusão só aumentou ainda mais quando foram anunciados quais eram os novos integrantes da banda. Afinal, o guitarrista Leo Mancini era desconhecido do grande público e tinha acabado de lançar seu primeiro álbum com a banda Tempestt, e o baixista Fernando Quesada era um completo desconhecido. Mas acredito que quem mais sofreu com a descrença tenha sido o vocalista Thiago Bianchi. Afinal, substituir André Matos não é para qualquer um e os trabalhos anteriores de Thiago (como as bandas Karma e Vox) pareciam indicar que o estilo dele não era o mais adequado para cantar na banda (e não eram poucos os que preferiam outras pessoas assumindo o posto de vocalista do Shaman).

Porém o fato é que essa nova formação organizada por Confessori foi capaz de gravar um álbum de muita qualidade. A começar pelo vocal de Bianchi, que logo na primeira música (Inside Chains) mostra a que veio.

Outra grata surpresa foi o ilustre desconhecido Fernando Quesada, que demonstrou não ser apenas extremamente habilidoso com o baixo (e isso é ainda mais impressionante ao sabermos que antes de entrar na banda ele se dedicava à guitarra), como também um ótimo compositor. Compondo a música In The Dark e sendo co-autor de tantas outras. Outro que também mostrou ser uma excelente aquisição para a banda na função de compositor é o guitarrista Leo Mancini (mas isso não é novidade para quem conhece o trabalho que ele realizou junto ao grupo Tempestt).

Mancini, diga-se de passagem elevou para um novo patamar de qualidade a seção de guitarras da banda. Mantendo a tradição de seu antecessor de criar riffs marcantes ele trouxe consigo um nível técnico e de virtuosidade até então inédito na banda.

O veterano Ricardo Confessori também mostrou a que veio, atuando como co-autor de duas letras de música e co-autor de várias músicas. Ele também voltou a tocar bateria melhor do que nunca, cumprindo a sua promessa de criar linhas de bateria tão boas quanto as dos álbuns Ritual e Holy Land.

O grupo ainda conta com o auxílio luxuoso do tecladista Fabrízio Di Sarno (Karma), que além de gravar as excelentes linhas de teclado e arranjos presentes no álbum, compôs a música de introdução Renovatti.

A sonoridade desse novo álbum traz o mais simples e puro Metal Melódico (para o bem ou para o mal). De fato, Confessori cumpriu meia promessa. Afinal quando a banda se separou ele alegou que pretendia voltar à sonoridade do álbum Ritual, e de fato, Immortal está mais próximo do Ritual do que o Reason. Mas, a bem da verdade, deve-se dizer que ele se encontra mais próximo da sonoridade mais tradicional do Metal Melódico, tendo uma abertura menor para aquele Heavy Metal banhado em world music como foi o primeiro álbum da banda.

Outro fato marcante desse álbum é que ele foi totalmente produzido aqui no Brasil, da gravação à masterização, tudo foi feito por aqui. Tendo Confessori e Bianchi encarregados da produção, e gravado nos estúdios Fusão VM&T e Plug-in (pertencentes ao vocalista e ao baterista respectivamente) é incrível como a banda conseguiu atingir uma qualidade de gravação de nível internacional. Sem ter que optar por fazer a mixagem ou a masterização no estrangeiro. Realmente surpreendente!

Apresentar destaques para esse álbum é complicado, pois o considero bastante equilibrado. Mas é impossível não comentar algumas músicas, como por exemplo Tribal By Blood, que é provavelmente a única que remete o ouvinte ao álbum Reason devido ao seu peso e agressividade.

One Life e Immortal são as músicas mais próximas de remeter o ouvinte ao primeiro álbum da banda. Enquanto a primeira é um dos grandes destaques do álbum (graças principalmente ao vocal do Bianchi), a segunda é a pior! Na faixa título a banda parece que tentou emular a sonoridade do Ritual e do Holy Land (do grupo Angra), mas a música acabou parecendo um remake da faixa título do álbum Holy Land, tendo até mesmo um índio falando no meio dela.

Por fim gostaria de destacar a música que encerra o álbum: The Yellow Brick Road. Tanto pelas belas melodias presentes nela, quanto pela ótima interpretação do vocalista. A música ainda apresenta uma aura meio experimental que acaba dando um belo final para o álbum.

Entre os que ficam do lado do “Shaman Immortal” e dos que ficam do lado do André Matos, eu prefiro ficar do lado da boa música. E esse álbum é sem sombra de dúvidas boa música! E ponto final.

Nem mondhatnám, hogy hiányt szenvedek mostanában az Angra család alkotásaiban. Nemrég újra nagyon megtetszett az anyabanda legutóbbi anyaga, egyben megszakadt a szívem, mert valószínűleg nem jutunk ki idén a Masters Of Rockra, ahol ők is fellépnek. Ezt követően egyszerre jutott el hozzám a mostani és a korábbi énekes egy-egy kiadványa: Edu Falaschi Almah című szólóalbuma (ez még 2006-os, tehát nem készül már róla cikk) és André Matos friss munkája. És ha ez nem lenne elég, itt a Shaman új albuma is – André tehát nem véletlenül készített saját lemezt: nemrég ugyanis kiszállt az annakidején ellen-Angraként létrejött csapatból és vitte magával a Mariutti tesókat is (gitár és basszus). Ezzel lényegében három részre szakadt az Angra família – hiába úgy szép az élet, ha zajlik és család ellen ugyebár nincs orvosság. Az sem teljesen világos, hova tűnt a plusz „a” betű a zenekarnévből, hiszen ezt pár éve jogi bonyodalmak miatt kellett beilleszteni, most viszont újra az eredeti elnevezést használja Ricardo Confessori dobos, aki az egyetlen megmaradt eredeti tag. Sebaj, ha belegondolunk, hogy zenészeink a szappanoperák őshazájának lakosai, akkor máris nemhogy érthetővé, de egyenesen elvárhatóvá válik a sok szarkavarás.

Ricardo mindenesetre nem szívbajoskodott, összehozott egy teljesen új felállást, amely számomra ismeretlen arcokból áll, de ismerve az utóbbi kb. 10 évben igencsak megizmosodott brazil színteret, nem aggódtam amiatt, hogy nem talál olyan társakat, akik megütik a színvonalat. Nos, Thiago Bianchi énekes valóban jó hanggal bír, de az a nagy helyzet, hogy mind Matosnál, mind Falaschinál szürkébb egy cseppet – tisztán, szépen énekel, hangterjedelme megfelelő, nem szirénázik feleslegesen, de valahogy hiányzik belőle az a drámaiság, kifejezőerő, mint elődéből és annak Angra-beli utódjából. A zenészek (Leo Mancini gitáros és Fernando Quesada basszer) sem tartoznak a fakezűek közé, különösen a gitárjáték bővelkedik kiemelkedő pillanatokban (élvezetesek a szólók), valahogy azonban az egész mégiscsak afféle „olyan, mintha, de mégsem”-érzést áraszt.

Jó hallgatni a lemezt, van itt minden, mint a búcsúban, angrás-helloweenes-szimfós témák, súlyosabb hangulatok, harapós riffelés, némi kis prog íz is beficcen, de semmiféle késztetést nem érzek arra, hogy az ismertető befejezése után is sokat hallgassam a lemezt. Mondjuk ki: a markáns egyéniségek távozásával picit befáradt a zene. Tudvalévő, hogy vannak bandák, ahol a dobos a szellemi agy, de a Shaman, úgy tűnik, nem tartozott és nem is tartozik ezek közé. Nincs ezzel semmi probléma, mert a zeneanyag bőven hallgatható és tulajdonképpen alapvetően nekem is tetszik. Viszont nemcsak az Angra klasszikus és mostani munkáihoz képest, de a tradicionális első és a dupla „a”-val ellátott, súlyosabb hangvételű kettes saját albumok fényében sem egy kiemelkedő dalcsokor. Persze ettől még nincs harag – ez van, ezt kell szeretni.

E a novela que aconteceu com a banda Angra, quando da ruptura do grupo paulistano, se repetiu com o Shaaman. Após a turnê do álbum Fireworks (1998), as coisas já não andavam bem com o relacionamento entre os membros da primeira, culminando na saída de Andre Matos (vocalista), Luis Mariutti (baixista) e Ricardo Confessori (baterista). Fato que, anos depois, se repetiu com a segunda após os shows de divulgação de Reason (2005), material este que recebeu diversas críticas negativas de fãs e imprensa mundo afora. Pois bem, acreditar que após a retirada dos irmãos Mariutti e André Matos, Ricardo Confessori conseguiria manter o Shaaman vivo, certamente poderia pender para o âmbito da utopia. Ledo engano companheiros!

O músico além de ter remontado a banda com um timaço da cena nacional - Thiago Bianchi (vocal), Leo Mancini (guitarra) e Fernando Quesada (baixo) -, ainda conseguiu lançar o disco mais consistente da carreira, do agora rebatizado Shaman, o grandioso Immortal. Contando com elementos que remetem ao debut do conjunto, Ritual (2002), acrescidos de facetas que faltavam em suas canções, Immortal agrada em todos os aspectos que compõem a obra. Ou será que um Xamã equatoriano genuíno na faixa título, agregado ao alto teor de introspecção da acústica “The Yellow Brick Road” não seriam tacadas de mestre numa compilação que simboliza o renascimento do quarteto? Podem apostar que sim! Somado a tudo isso, acompanhar a evolução do vocalista Thiago Bianchi é algo que imediatamente salta aos ouvidos. Thiago é responsável pelo lado agressivo inédito na sonoridade do grupo, ressaltado principalmente nas excelentes “Freedom”, “Strenght”, “Tribal By Blood” e “Inside Chains”, todas elas numa fúria absurda. Por outro lado, as melódicas “In The Dark” (belíssima balada), “One Life” (clássica absoluta) e “Never Yeld!”, servem de contraponto para ressaltar a complexidade qualitativa dessa nova formação, fundamentada pelos riffs sempre precisos de Leo Mancini e, principalmente, pela cozinha sempre cativante, levada a cabo por Ricardo e Fernando.

Mais um grande lançamento da prolífica cena brasileira, que ostenta respeitabilidade evidente em todo o globo. O Shaman provou que ainda tem muita lenha para queimar e, sobretudo, muita história a escrever em sua honrosa carreira. Que venham os shows da Immortal tour, porque se depender do conteúdo do CD aqui analisado, será obrigatória a presença dos fãs de canto a canto do Brasil/Europa/Japão.

01 – Renovatti (Intro) - Raphael Finardi
Quem nunca pensou em iniciar um cd com uma introdução própria? Não apenas usar a criatividade e o espírito para montar algo que inicia o cd, mas deixar de lado as antigas composições da música Erudita. Para surpreender e, ao mesmo tempo cria um ambiente e um espaço de suspense para o inicio. Conta com uma percussão marcante, violinos presentes flautas, criando aquela expectativa que precede a segunda faixa do álbum (Inside Chains).
É uma composição do tecladista convidado da banda Fabrizio de Sarna e foi gravada por músicos da OSESP.

02 – Inside Chains – Thales Maciel
Após o clima tenso e envolvente da Introdução, toda a energia contida é liberada na segunda faixa. Riffs poderosos acompanhados de uma cozinha precisa iniciam a primeira música cantada. E por falar em canto, pra quem esperava uma linha vocal mais suave, terão uma agradável surpresa ao se deparar com vocais fortes e empolgantes, sem deixar de lado a linha melódica marcante da banda.
A segunda faixa tem sua letra bem representada pelo título, pois é como um grito guardado sendo liberado, mostrando toda a força do novo e “imortal” Shaman.É uma composição do novo guitarrista da banda Leo Mancini e mostra bem, o lado virtuoso acrescentado nessa nova etapa da historia do Shaman.

03 – Tribal By Blood - Raphael Finardi
A música mais pesada do cd em minha opinião. Um som bem pesado, mostrando
"a cara nova" da formação. Não tem como duvidar que Leo Mancini colocou o diferencial nas novas guitarras do Shaman. A voz de Thiago Bianchi também se destaca muito nesta faixa, o novo vocal da banda acaba mostrando bem versátil, um vocal poderoso, com rasgados marcantes, e riffs poderosos, é uma musica que com certeza será indispensável no set list dos shows.

04 – Immortal – Thales Maciel
A faixa titulo do álbum retrata as dificuldades superadas pela força de vontade e grande união da nova formação, com um clima envolvente, cheio de Feeling.
Vale o destaque para a Originalidade da banda, ao inserir um trecho de fala feito por um Shaman verdadeiro, de uma tribo Equatoriana. Assim Immortal, mostra que tudo depende de todos, e nossos sonhos e desejos são imortais.

05 - One Life – Raphael Finardi
O que significa uma vida, diante de um dia que está preste a nascer? A One Life conta com um violão a lá erudita e lembrando as raízes mais fortes que o nome Shaman traz a todos. Algumas coisas foram alteradas da versão
disponibilizada no Site que seria uma Demo. Os sons do universo e de todos os elementos unidos por um pedal rápido, percussão, flautas e Riffs mostrando que todos devem se unir se para um novo futuro e nunca desistir, começar de novo e seguir em frente.

06 – In The Dark – Thales Maciel
Uma música muito importante para a banda, pois com ela foi à responsável por decidir quem seria o novo baixista do Shaman.
Uma linda balada que une melodia e peso, a Faixa se consagra como uma das principais músicas do disco, sendo escolhida para ser o primeiro vídeo clipe com a nova formação, que saira junto às músicas do cd tanto aqui quanto no exterior

07 – Strenght – Raphael Finardi
Uma música diferente entre as outras faixas, mas não saindo da linha das
outras letras. A faixa fala sobre aqueles dias na vida em que as vezes
Nada da certo, mas que apesar de tudo, temos força para continuar
Nossa jornada. Nossos sonhos são sempre o que devemos escolher,
Nunca perdendo a esperança de que não poderemos realizá-los.
Conta também com a presente a marcante bateria que sempre foi característica nas composições do Ricardo trazendo de volta levadas e contra tempos fazendo-nos relembrar passagens do Angra e do Shaman já q essa é uma música que ele já tinha a algum tempo.

08 – Freedom – Raphael Finardi
Depois da apresentada música "Be Free", Ricardo e Thiago decidiram mudá-la
totalmente. A música que foi apresentada em muitos show do Shaman, foi reformulada pelos mesmos e ficou incrível! O que não passava de uma música instrumental ganhou letra e como nas outras faixas Riffs e mais Riffs por Leo Mancini. É uma musica que explora varias levadas de batera que remetem a varias fases da carreira de Ricardo tanto no Angra quanto no Shaman, apresentando batidas regionais e percussão como sempre. A letra retrata bem o momento que a banda vem vivendo e tem uma mensagem sobre como as coisas e as pessoas devem seguir sem rumo e assim serem livres para aquilo que de fato devem ser.

09 - Never Yield! – Thales Maciel
Composta por Fernando Quesada, essa é a ultima faixa pesada do álbum, e a ultima a ter sido incluída no mesmo.
A faixa esta em um tom bem alto para a voz, guitarras virtuosas ao Maximo, e claro, conta com a clássica “pegada” de bateria de Ricardo Confessori.
é uma previa para a ultima faixa do Immortal, a ultima musica q prepara para uma coisa inedita, nunca feita pela banda em tda sua trajetoria.

10 - The Yellow Brick Road – Raphael Finardi
Simplesmente a faixa que faltava para a banda. Uma música acústica! Rituais indígenas, tubas, chocalhos... Essa música diz tudo, momentos para refletir, lembranças de toda uma vida passada, pensamentos sobre tudo que passou e os caminhos seguidos que foram traçados. Por tudo que tenha acontecido, magoas e momentos difíceis, temos que continuar nossas trajetórias, a partir dai descobrir o verdadeiro sentido da vida. Música que encaixou perfeitamente no final do cd e que ficou a cargo da composição de Fernando Quesada e Thiago Bianchi.

Recensire questo “Immortal” mi ha creato non pochi problemi, visto la mia devozione verso Andre Matos come singer e verso gli Shaman come band; oltrepiù, anche se uscito lo scorso anno, ne sono entrato in possesso dopo aver già assimilato “Time To Be Free”, e questo mi rendeva un po' scettico sulle capacità (unicamente a livello di idee) di mr. Confessori.
Ma partiamo dall'antefatto…Matos e i fratelli Mariutti, dopo il tour di “Reason” (secondogenito della band) decidono di uscirsene (o meglio di sciogliere) la loro creatura Shaaman, visti i problemi legati alle divergenze musicali innescatesi negli ultimi tempi…il quarto elemento, il prodigioso drummer Ricardo Confessori, invece sceglie di riportare in auge la band, tornando al monicker Shaman e reclutando tre validi e sconosciuti compagni che lo coaudivino a esprimere il proprio pensiero, in modo da poter personalizzare il sound senza l'ausilio dell'ingombrante (solo a livello compositivo) Matos.

Il risultato di tanto faticare risiede nelle tracce di questo “Immortal”, album che viene presentato come la migliore rinascita del combo brasiliano in questione; la prima cosa che traspare è (logicamente) la differenza nelle parti vocali; Thiago Bianchi è veramente un gran cantante, nelle songs ci mette anima e corpo (e immedesimazione) e il materiale è stato sviluppato propriamente per le due doti canore; certo il confronto con Matos è arduo, perché pur che riesca a raggiungere note altissime producendo un falsetto bello e corposo, il buon Andre rimane al di sopra del giovane brasiliano; a suo favore comunque, rimane la buona capacità nel raggiungere note profonde dove sicuramente Matos avrebbe trovato più difficoltà…

La seconda differenza sta nelle composizioni; ci sono sempre le parti orchestrali (“Renovatti” è un'intro di tre minuti unicamente orchestrale), la doppia cassa velocissima, i tempi speed, qualche parte puramente ‘brasileira'come mr. Confessori ci ha ben fatto conoscere nel corso degli anni, ma il pacchetto risulta nell'insieme più oscuro rispetto alle release precedenti e rispetto anche agli stessi Angra del periodo d'oro; molto incentrato sulle ritmiche di chitarra, serrate e graffianti le quali fanno emergere maggiormente le parti vocali, alcune delle quali ricercate e nuove, ma nel contesto generale il platter in oggetto non aggiunge molto più di quanto non sia già stato creato in questo genere.

In maggior dettaglio, oltre alla già citata “Renovatti”, spiccano sulle altre come valore e come esecuzione “Immortal”, “One Life” (davvero pregevole) e “In The Dark”, in cui le qualità del quartetto si mettono in mostra maggiormente (in certi punti Bianchi ricorda vagamente Michael Kiske); non male nemmeno le speed songs “Strenght” e “Trial By Blood”, composte da chorus accattivanti e facilmente ricordabili, e un appunto è doveroso farlo anche per la conclusiva acustica “The Yellow Brick Road”, caratterizzata da arie molto fresche in cui Bianchi cerca di far dimenticare il proprio predecessore e per “Inside Chaos”, che rappresenta il miglior connubbio tra le idee più grintose e la voce di Bianchi citate prima nonchè nuovo percorso intrapreso dalla band.

Se mi chiedessero di fare un paragone rispetto al nuovo platter dei tre ex membri della band, direi che a livello di idee “Time To Be Free” risulta più ricco, meno lineare a livello compositivo e anche il sound stesso è stato prodotto con maggior mezzi rispetto a “Immortal”…ciò non toglie, comunque, che la prova di Confessori e soci sia un ottimo inizio, un buon punto di partenza dal quale procedere ampliando i propri orizzonti. Le capacità ci sono e si sentono, quindi…

Замечено, что у бразильского пауэр-металлического эльфа Андре Матоса есть немало поклонников, которые с яростью и критикой обрушиваются на всех, кто приходит на его место. Так было в случае с Angra, где Эду Фаласки вполне себе здорово заменил сладкоголосого соотечественника. Тоже самое произошло и на этот раз. Если Матос умудрился покинуть уже две неплохо раскрученные команды, может быть, проблема не в окружении, а в самом музыканте? Так или иначе, спустя два года после выхода в свет "Reason" (2005), шаманы выбросили на рынок новый диск, который смотрится не хуже, а в некоторых моментах даже цельнее двух предыдущих работ коллектива. Возможно, дело в том, что изначальные задумки Матоса никогда ничем путным не заканчивались. Angra в конце концов (уже без него) эволюционировала в сторону европауэра, хотя и со своими яркими и неповторимыми элементами. Судьба Shaman сложилась ещё менее примечательной. Матос, казалось, был уверен в своей неповторимости, но его детище неплохо выживает и своими силами.
В нашем распоряжении – очередная партия эпического пауэра, который расположился где-то между Angra и Symphony X, ровно на таком расстоянии от своего прародителя, чтобы сделать материал бразильцев более прямолинейным. По сравнению с довольно вялым "Reason" свежачок смотрится динамично, хотя и не свежо, в нём мало деталей, зато он наполнен приятными мелодиями. Ещё одна деталь – на записи отточенный до безобразия звук, что изредка мешает воспринимать специально вышколенные риффы. Звёзд "Immortal", конечно, с неба не хватает, но в данном случае это вряд ли требуется. Главное для Shaman просто выйти на определённый уровень и уверенно доказать, что и без Андре Матоса они чувствуют себя вполне сносно. Очень твёрдая четвёрка.
