biografía : Awkward Silence

The beginnings of Awkward Silence date back to 2007, when vocalist/bassist J. Michalski headed into the studio with enough original material to lay down a full-length album. After tracking all the vocal, bass and guitar tracks himself, Michalski called on the drumming talents of Jim Austin (Into Eternity, Omon) to put the final percussive touches on “Little Ineffectual Nothing,” a 9-track auditory assault of bipolar rhythms and seriously entrancing grooves.

Through word of mouth – and the occasional copy handed out to inquiring minds – a buzz around “Little Ineffectual Nothing” spread through the Red Deer, Alta. metal community. With increasing demand to hear the music live, Michalski set out to establish a full Awkward Silence line-up. When Michalski met Rory Nicholson through the local metal scene, it wasn’t difficult to realize who the lead half of the dual-attack guitar team would be. A graduate of Red Deer College (RDC) music program he focused on music theory in both classical and jazz guitar styles.

Coupled with some steely metal roots and a serious but relaxed approach to music, he was an easy casting decision. A drummer was found in Red Deer resident Greg Glenn, who’d been solidifying tight blast beats and rapid-fire double kicks since the age of eight. After taking some time away from the music scene to focus on family and a career, Randall Stone was busy building a home studio when he met Michalski through a mutual friend. After jamming a couple times on a casual basis; Stone formally auditioned for rhythm guitar. Stone and Nicholson proved a great team, and Stone’s previous band experience and 21 years on guitar made him a solid addition to the group.

By spring 2009, Awkward Silence only had three practice sessions as a band when they tackled their first live performance. With a brief three-song set, they left the crowd pumped and wanting more. The band has played a number of shows across the province since their first foray under the stage lights, with more songs being added to their set as they go. One of the hottest new bands in Alberta’s metal circuit, and with a catchy and headbang-worthy sound that can only be described as a stylistically diverse progressive metal band, with a heavy emphasis on syncopation, groove, and mood, you’ll want to keep your eyes and ears peeled
