Though more Pop in essence, the new SDOS will kick your ass so much more than Of Us!

I had last year the opportunity to review Of Us from Six Degrees Of Separation (SDOS) so when I saw a request to review their latest release Ubl, I jumped in without hesitation. Even though Of Us left me a bit puzzled and uncertain as if to whether it was a masterpiece or not, I was all the more curious to see if there’d be some evolution in SDOS’ sound.

Fact is, SDOS play SDOS. It's still that strange mixture of just everything we may know in Metal and Pop but this time on Ubl, the Pop aspect of SDOS seems to be even greater. Where some songs on Of Us were hard to grasp, Ubl gives us only catchy tunes, one to sing and hum to. Not strange to this fact is their own cover of Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning which in my opinion is a fantastic way to end the record. And believe it or not, but the Czech version of this Aussie rock classic is even better than the original. Twisted yes but so much better.

Although they gave in more into their Pop arrangements, the music of SDOS is still very much personal and introspective lyrically speaking which makes for an interesting contrast between anthem-like music and lyrics that are deep in meaning.

In fact the album is so catchy and well done that my only concern is its quite short length nearing only 30 minutes. Although the good point is its high replay value and the fact that to make up for such a short duration the Czech have also included a bonus DVD with live footage, videos and interviews of the band subtitled in English. The product is classy and a perfect eye-candy for every person that takes pride in looking at their discotheque.

As much as I could find myself dumbfounded by their previous release, I’m now totally convinced. Get it!
