When I first learned of them they had a lot to live up to. I saw them on a link that said "The next
Darkthrone?" and me being a big fan of Black
Metal, I immediately checked them out. Although obviously they weren't as great as
Darkthrone, they were pretty good, combining the nice atmospheres of both Black and
Doom metal to give us a nice insight into more to come from the
Solid Giant.
The first song I heard was Morphine Tomb which starts out with some low-tuned guitar and seems doomy, then it breaks into its blackness, midpaced drumming with the guitar trembling in the background. Their vocals come in and it sounds unlike any growls I've heard before, it sounds to me like he's gasping for air, a nice touch to the music. The next song is
Serpent Womb, which starts out very slowly, but very nice and very doomy, and here come those great gaspy vocals, rasping us a spell to capture us in the
Solid Giant's songs. The song remains slow throughout its duration but it's a great track. The final song is called Hic Sunt Dracones, which starts out much faster, not too fast but faster than the other songs, it sounds very black for the first few seconds then breaks into its doom influences, and remains slow and atmospheric 'til the end.
Overall, a very great demo, its only flaw is its length, only three tracks! Although this is a great technique, leave them wanting more, this is enough to get you hooked onto
Solid Giant, it was enough for me, I recommend you check them out if you are a fan of Black and
Doom metal.
