A very good brutal grind record

Terminally Your Aborted Ghost is a brutal band born in Boston. This, their first full length album titled "Slowly Peeling the Flesh from the Inside of a Folded Hand, was released by Macabre Mementos Records in 2005. In my opinion, this is one of the best brutal/grind album out there today!

Let us start with the overall sound of this record. This record has a dark, murky, under produced sound that works very well in the brutal metal genres. The sound works so well because it adds an atmosphere, an ambiance, a feel that makes the hair on your arms stand up at times. Another thing that caught my eye about this particular album is it doesn't stay in the normal realms of brutality. In some songs it experiments in mathcore type elements and atmospheric clean passages with whispering in the background that adds a sort of unhinged, creepy element. Songs like Undying Corpse of Joy, the title track and the short instrumental Fractionally Digested Vowel Structure make use of these atmospheric sections and the quick time signature shifts associated with mathcore.

The album itself's also pretty technical. The guitarist, Matt Rowe is his name if I remember correctly, is a very competent guitarist. Though he's no John Gallgher, he does have pretty technical and interesting riffs. The instrumentals at time catch me off guard, such as the random clean strum near the middle of Perpetuating Human Murder. Another thing that caught me off guard is that the bassist, Adam Spalding, is actually heard in various parts of this album and is actually a very decent bassist. It adds another atmospheric and almost haunting element to have the bass heard in parts and it's always great when every member of the band is used and is able to add to an album’s sound. The drumming, as usual in metal these days, is great. I actually enjoy the drums more and more every time I listen to this album. In songs like An Analogy Like A Snuff Film the drumming is brilliant! Finally, the guttural vocals of Devon Wedge are superb. I can't tell, mostly because I don't really know how to tell, if they’re inhales or exhales but either way they are magnificent. His gutturals are very nicely done and in some songs, A Ubiquitous Aftermath of Sorts is where it's most prominent, he uses mid-low growls that are extremely nice!

The one flaw of this album, to me, are some songs are forgettable. There’s about three or four songs that could be taken out of the album and I wouldn't notice much. Also, I'm one to look at and enjoy lyrics and with this genre there is no doing that. You kind of have to take their word for it that they are the lyrics. The lyrics, though, are good and gory even though I can't match lyrics to music.

Overall, very very well done. Seventeen out of twenty possible points. My personal favorite song is Slowly Peeling the Flesh from the Inside of a Folded Hand. I'd recommend this album to anyone into brutal metal or who is looking for someone doing something different with brutal metal.
