Crónica @ Onni

22 Mayo 2010
This Finnish melodic heavy-power metal band was founded back in 1995, but for the few first years the name was “Lucid”. They have a pretty long story with a number of demos and just one album. The story of Helion is never-ending changes of the line-up, with the same 3-members’ core. Maybe that’s why they are not much known and they have only one full-length album in 15 years.

Actually, it’s a quite sad fact. The band itself is awesome. Not only this promo of year 2005, but also other works of Helion are worth attention. Helion’s records are quite different due to the different musicians, especially vocalists. If to speak about “Shadow of the Sun”, it’s a powerful masterfully made 3 songs in heavy metal style, full of melodies. “Shadow of the Sun” combines melody, rhythm and heaviness of the true metal. It is well-recorded and well-produced; this quality could be suitable for a full-length album, not only for a small promo. Crashing guitar riffs, drumming above reproach, harmony between the guitar and the keyboards, the perfect balance of all instruments, and of course the very important part – the vocal that suits the music, harsh and thick voice of Jukka Salo, who is not in the band anymore.

“Black Inside” starts with keyboards’ intro but soon turns out to the powerful. Driving and fast song with clinking chorus, standard strings in the background and short but bright guitar solo. Number 2 is “Reconnect My Life” – more guitar-oriented piece but in a whole absolutely in the same vein than the previous one. The melodies are of the same form than before, but it’s catchy and driving song. “Shadow of the Sun”, the title song, is different. It’s more like midtempo, more settled, more atmospheric and even calm but with inner intensity. It’s the longest song on the Promo and it provides the quiet interlude and then sharp but unfortunately short keyboard solo, along with some choirs in the choruses.
The Promo is published in the modest but very stylish carton envelope with splendid appearance and almost all the necessary information – except only the lyrics.
