it is a must have for both fans, geeks and nerds and for everyone who runs a metal pub or club.
Yeah, it's a new
Powerglove record!
That's just like back in the days when I was a small kiddo and I got a new game for my Nintendo on Christmas. The sadly still quite unknown band took up the mission to bring Geeks, Nerds and
Metal (even) further together by top notch and kick ass instrumental cover songs - the (power) metal way. On their first two records, METAL KOMBAT FOR MORTAL MEN and
Total Pwnage, they focused entirely on video game music, like Super Mario Bros., Mega Man, Sonic and many more. Now, on their third album
Saturday Morning Apocalypse, they pay their tribute to to some of the best cartoon shows.
The first song is the 'X-Men' theme, which really kick starts the shredding mania. Chris Marchiel's and Alex Berkso's fingers are flying over the strings close to lightspeed. Other highlights of the CD are 'Batman' (which has a really darkish and doomish style), 'Inspector
Sonata Arctica' (which is mixed with the famous '
Inside the hall of the
Mountain King'), and of course the yellow family we all love, 'The Simpsons' (which is a rollercoaster through all kind of metal genres). The respective and catchy theme melodies are also augmented with synthesiser effects and samples and once in a while there is a smooth acoustic break. As sort of a bonus in the end the 'Pokemon' theme comes again, this time with guest vocals by Tony Kakko (
Sonata Arctica).
Compared to the previous two records,
Saturday Morning Apocalypse is a little less innovative and diverse. However, it is a must have for both fans, geeks and nerds and for everyone who runs a metal pub or club. Even those, who did not spent their whole Saturday morning in front of the TV to watch cartoons as a child should give this album a listen, as on the technical side this band is absolutely perfect. This is metal with a big portion of irony.
