I open the box and put the CD into player. This album has black and white artwork: severe classic, with adding sometimes a bit of other colours. Musicians on the photos are in the same black & white style; just 2 guest musicians have something read in clothes. On the brick background you can read lyrics (if you can read in Russian) and acknowledgements from the band. This is the very first full-length album of the young Moscow-based band.
I’ve written this description while the intro was playing: atmospheric calm and mysterious intro with choir. You would never guess what will follow it! The first song is philosophical “Whose Trademark on My Soul?” (in the end of the album there’s the same song in English as bonus). This is wild and powerful music with energy guitar riffs and humming drumming. This song presents the main vocals – growl and scream of G.O.D., the leader of the band and author of all lyrics, and unbelievable female voice of Nookie, who is master of rock vocal. The next title song “I am God” is really different, slower but equally drive. With calm but also with some inner exertion verses, rhythmic and very emotional choruses, this song presents other forms of vocals – different kinds of declamation.
All the songs on the album are quite different, so it’s a bit difficult to tell what music style these guys play. Here you can hear alternative metal, something from black metal and melodic death. It’s a modern metal mix done with skill and feeling, sincerity and emotions. Most of songs on the CD are shorter than 5 minutes.
“Damned City” is fast and furious picture of contemporary city. I should add that Viper Inc has really good lyrics, they have a lot to say and they express their thoughts in a perfect form. “What Will Be After” (in English) again changes the rhythm and tempo. Such changes along with different vocals give the album incredible dynamic and taste of wide range of styles. “On The Edge of Winter” has some clear male vocals, but sounds maybe too boring; it’s definitely not the best song of the album. The best must be maybe gorgeous “Waterfall Of Time”, already known by EP released back in 2008. Incredible voice of Nookie and great melodies make it catchy and epic. “This Is Lie” is a kind of ballad, rhythmic but yet calm with a flavour of tragedy. Actually, every song is quite emotional; every song has its melody and nice keyboard arrangement besides the massive guitar and rhythm-section work. The next is “Not on the Cards” – fast, powerful, crashing piece. Another undeniable success of the album is “The Last Judgement”, where this crashing energy of the verse meets touching melody of the chorus, the horrible meaning of lyrics meets the beauty of the performing.
I have to tell also that the band has invited a lot of guest musicians from bright and famous Russian metal bands (like Deform, Idol, Arcane Grail, SLOT and others). Viper Inc uses these additional resources so smoothly and masterfully that it seems to be a one band, the integral image wasn’t disturbed. Can you believe that this is just the debut album?
