Harrowing

When one is presented with an album that is entirely one long, 70 minute song belonging to the Drone Doom genre a certain degree of patience and perseverance is required. After all, when you've got a genre that is foremost concerned with the construction of atmosphere through the use of long, repetitive and droning music then it is understandable why so many people turn their noses the other way to this austere and inaccessible form of music. It takes a certain mindset to be able to fully “get” drone so to speak, of course for those who are able to grasp the genre in its entirety will find El Mundo Frio are compelling and harrowing release, for those not acquainted to the genre however then they will no doubt become bored within the first few minutes.

Corrupted is a band that can hardly be accused of selling out, after all El Mundo Frio is a seventy minute long journey into a twisted and tormented mind where long winded instrumental passages create some of the most harrowing atmospheres known to man. It's a significantly difficult album to fully appreciate without the correct mindset, it takes a particular type of person to enjoy this form of music, because of this I will recommend this album to and only to drone fans. The level of minimalism on display here will be appalling to most listeners, the focus on atmosphere and lack of hooks or anything even remotely catchy will definitely be a turn off.

Therefore I think it is fair to say that the best way to approach this type of music is to abolish what you thought music was, if you take away the notations that all music needs to have a set structure, hooks or anything that can be described as “catchy” then El Mundo Frio will be a much easier album to appreciate. El Mundo Frio is certainly not an album that is interested in fulfilling the stereotypes of what the media thinks music should be, El Mundo Frio is an album that is a complete polar opposite to anything that can be considered mainstream.

El Mundo Frio is essentially one of, if not the most extreme album I have ever heard. When it comes to looking at the descriptor extreme then there's two ways that music can be considered as such. You can take it in the classic meaning and see it as anything that is brutal, heavy or abrasive, take most Black, Death, Doom and Sludge Metal for pointers. But then there's the other meaning, you could take extreme to mean anything that is different, austere, anything that goes against the usual conventions of music to create something alien and foreign. I bring this up because El Mundo Frio is extreme in both of its possible meanings. It's heavy as hell, the atmosphere is pitch black and it's completely abrasive to the ears whilst also being a complete turn around from all the conventions of usual music. If that sounds like something you wouldn't be able to stomach then I would advise you to stay well away from this one then, you will be horrified.

El Mundo Frio isn't merely just an album, it's an experience more than anything else. It's something that all fans of atmospheric metal should listen to at least once. The atmosphere is not like anything else I've heard before, it's unbelievably dark, even passing Bethlehem's Dark Metal in terms of how pitch black everything is. The atmosphere has a decaying, urban vibe to it, it creates a decaying and stagnant industrial aura over the music that makes it all the more engrossing. I think an apt comparison would be the surrealist film Eraserhead, I bring it up because both are very effective in portraying a bleak industrial landscape. The atmosphere of El Mundo Frio is certainly unique in its portrayal and is one of the most endearing I have ever come across.

The atmosphere is created by the use of simple guitar playing and a juxtaposition between heavy and light. The light sections are eerily calm and harrowing whilst the harder sections are abrasive and brutal. The vocals in particular add an almost surreal like quality to the atmosphere, the way he growls out the lyrics are unique and effective, not sounding like other vocalists I have come across. There's also some spoken word parts to add to the atmosphere, they're delivered in a harrowing way and certainly aren't cheesy.

In particular I really like the way in which the song is structured, it all builds up slowly and all the transitions between heavy and light seemingly blend together smoothly, it flows like the oceans tide, constantly moving and shifting. All of it is designed to keep your interest and it succeeds immaculately. This is music to think and reflect to, and definitely not for the typical music fan.
