I would first like to start this review by saying that it is not a traditional critique because I am the sole musician (with the exception of "Freezing
Moon) in this band and recorded all of the songs on my own equipment (as well as some friends') and the album was completely self funded. I may seem at times like I am under rating myself, but I am extremely particular about my music and will point out little details that the listener may not notice. I will give a full reveiw of every song on the album/ep as well as some liner notes on my thought on the music as it is my own.
This album consits entirely of cover songs from some of my particularly favorite bands. I would also like to point out that none of these song were recorded at the same time or place and only two of the songs were recorded using the same recording equipment and mixers. Let us start off with the intro track Decent into the abyss. This track is the introduction to
Emperor's demo tape "Wrath of The
Tyrant" there really is not much to say about the=is track other than it was the first song I ever recorded with this incarnation Of EIB. It was recorded with a four track recorder that belongs to my aquaintence Jake Stamatis. The entire song was recorded soley with the use of a simple keyboard plugged directly into the recorder.
The second track, a cover of
Burzum's "lost
Wisdom" was my favorite and was originally meant to be realeased as a demo/single used just to spread the word. The one thing I dislike about the song is that I used a mic that was not very consistant and the volume fades in and out as I held the mic in my hand rather than using a mic stand, and wasn't able to keep it in one position. I placed the song on my myspace.com
Earned in Blood Music page and was told by several of my peers that I should release a MCD/Ep with that song as well as others that I had mentioned to them. The equipment used was an Epiphone SG Goth guitar, and Ibenez bass(forget which model), and maypex custom drumset. the recorders/ mixers belonged to a band named Sub-VooDoo and gladly let me use it to record it.
Track 3,
Mayhem's "Freezing moon" which is my Least favorite of all of the tracks was recorded in a hurry using the same Equipment used for "
Lost Wisdom." It took myself 3 days to get most of the guitars done. I was not able to get the lead just right and had to get Jake Stamatis to fill in on certain parts. The drums were programmed due to the lack of time with the recorders, and the vocal were left out completely because i had not the time to learn them. this track was the worst song on the album. I have second thoughts now as to whether or not I should have left it off of the final mix being that it was in the state that it was in, and I regret not going back another time to record real drums on the track.
The fourth track as well as the easiest/simplest to learn and record was
Burzum's "Crying Orc."this was recorded and mixed in 15-20 minutes and consists of only to tracks overlayed with each other.Instead of recording it with Guitars as Varg Vikernes did, I decided the take a more simple and depressive approach(as it was called the "CRYING" orc). I left out a few nots I felt Unnessicary and left it simple. It was recorded on a DP-01 8-track recorder.
The final song on the album was
Darkthrone's "Transylvanian Hunger." The only things that I dislike about the songis that I was limited to four tracks, and left the bass turned up too loud and it created a distortion. The track is noticable shorter than the original because I did it in a hurry just to have anothe song to replace one that was cut in the last minute. I left out most of the lyrics out of the song because I could not remember them.
The song that was cut was a cover of mayhem's "Deathcrush." the song was originally cut due to the very crude nature of the recording and the poor musicianship(I had just learned the song and hdn't had time to perfect it yet.) The song will be re-recorded on my upcoming release
Desolate.
